Hi, In2Jesus... The word doctrine simply means teaching. In the passage you cited, John was speaking of the teachings of Christ and the Apostles. Paul encourages us to do the same thing here in Ephesians and throughout his epistles. When we say "we are no longer under the law" what we mean is that we are no longer under the penalty of the law. This does not mean that we do not study the Old Testament. However, we understand the Old Testament in the light of the New Testament. I hope this adequately answers your questions. In Him, Doc |

One more note here.Many young christians have the impression that with the advent of Jesus Christ that the law went away. Not so.Jesus himself stated clearly that he came to fulfill the law not to abolish it.The one thing that went away was the need for animal sacrifice.
