1 | What are the 2 types of Grace | Eph 2:8 | DocI333 | 163895
Good Day Everyone, What are the two (2) types of "GRACE"? 2 Words... A know-it-all asked me that and when I said that I didn't know he replied, "Go ask a priest!" and left. I will be praying for him until God takes my resentment. I still would like your feed back. Peace, Wisdom and God's Grace, Dave |

2 | What are the 2 types of Grace | Eph 2:8 | ebrain | 163896
If you are refering to the Grace of God, then there is only one. Any one who says otherwise is mistaken, although it might be said that some people are capable of exibiting grace to others, but this grace will not forgive sins against God. |

Hi, DocI333... I agree with brother ebrain. Even though the old divines speak of something called "common grace" (cf Matthew 5:45), I have never found a verse that uses the word grace in this fashion. I'd rather say that such things are simply a manifestation of "God's Sovereign Goodness" (as Dr. Terry Chrisope puts it). Also, this odd notion that a person can become more and more pleasing to God is also a distortion of sanctification, and a real diminution of what Christ accomplished on the cross. Clearly we are to grow in holiness as believers, but this does not mean we are growing more pleasing to God. God's pleasure with us has nothing to do with merit. His pleasure with us is simply a matter of His sovereign choice alone, through grace alone, by faith alone, of the cross of Christ alone. Our pursuit of holiness is a response of love because of what He has wrought within us. Now, clearly, there is "saving faith" and "temporary faith." But, perhaps, that is for another discussion. Dear Jeff, Thank you for bringing these Scriptures to bear on the question. They help to lay to rest the humanistic notion of increasing our merit before God. In Him, Doc You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. (Romans 8:9) For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. (1 Thessalonians 4:7) |

7 | Saving and Forgiving Grace? | Eph 2:8 | jlhetrick | 163947
Hi Doc, I'm not sure they do much to demonstrate a good rebuttal to those who might argue that we can "increase our merit before God". There is pleny of scripture to do that sufficiently and undeniably though. I believe that these verses do help to demonstrate that we certainly can please God. Pleasing Him though does nothing concering out "merit" as that is sufficiently accounted for by the work of Christ and God's Holy Spirit only. I realize that this was the context of the thread. I only wanted to show that, yes, we can and do please God when we obey Him. Just as we grieve Him when we are disobedient. Of course, obedience does nothing to add to our merit as nothing we contribute can increase or inhance what has been given freely by grace. with love, Jeff |

Dear Jeff, You wrote, "Obedience does nothing to add to our merit as nothing we contribute can increase or inhance what has been given freely by grace." Which is exactly what I was asserting. Thank you! In Him, Doc |
