I know that we are the church. Is there danger in not belonging to a particular church family or a member of a church because our souls need to be watched over and prayed for by the pastor of that particular house such as we need to be covered. Is it wrong not to want to belong, but to be able to visit wherever one wants without having to be committed to one church or denomanation | ||||||

Hi, H and T... I think there are quite a few problems that arise when active church membership is neglected. Of course, in most churches, we don't do a very good job of explaining the benefits and responsibility of Biblical church membership. We emphasize the personal nature of salvation to such an extent that we end up giving the impression that believer can live out his faith alone. While it might be possible, it would be very abnormal. By the way, your question is a very old one! It has been discussed throughout Christian history many times. As you are noticing yourself, it has unique pertinence for each generation of believers. We've been talking a lot about Ephesians lately. Clearly that epistle assures us that God's efforts in election, regeneration, adoption, and sanctification are for the explicit purpose of building a "temple made not with hands" (Ephesians 2:18ff) for His "called out ones" (ecclesia). As though that weren't enough, there are many commands of Scripture that simply can't be performed outside of a church setting (see post #181621). Furthermore, as you suggested, the church preserves us from self-deception (Hebrews 3:12-13; Ephesians 4:10-16), etc. In my estimation, the following little tutorial is excellent. It answers your question far more succinctly than I might do. http://marks.9marks.org/Mark6/ After you go there, just click the "START" button. It isn't very long. Dr. Mark Dever does a great job of showing from Scripture the various aspects of church membership. Please note that this tutorial is uniquely from a Baptist perspective. Not that I'm apologizing! :-) I just think it is far more honest when we are clear about our theological underpinnings. In Him, Doc |
