3 | Don't think that's the scripture-HELP | Eph 2:10 | Hiedya | 128900
Steve, thanks for responding, but I don't think that's the scripture. I'm looking for the one that says "God has a purpose for us that only we can fulfill. If we don't do it, it won't get done" Something along these lines. Can you think of any other scriptures? HELP! I just read a book or three this week and can't remember which one I saw that scripture in! I don't want to read all three again. :( |

No, thats not it either. Maybe the Author in one of the books I read paraphrased and that's why I can't seem to find the scripture. It just simply says that He has a divine purpose for us that noone else in this world can do and if we don't do it then it will never be done. I can't do what He has called you to do and if you die, that purpose will never come to fruition. Maybe this helps alittle bit more. Sorry if it doesn't.

Scripture doesn't imply that notion anywhere. However, it is often promulgated in popular neo-evangelical circles. You will also find this in some books that are making a lot of money for their authors these days.

Hi, 1949! Welcome to the forum! God does have a specific will for your life: obey Him as King. 1 Thessalonians 5:14-24 Now we exhort you, brethren, warn them that are unruly, comfort the feebleminded, support the weak, be patient toward all men. (15) See that none render evil for evil unto any man; but ever follow that which is good, both among yourselves, and to all men. (16) Rejoice evermore. (17) Pray without ceasing. (18) In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you. (19) Quench not the Spirit. (20) Despise not prophesyings. (21) Prove all things; hold fast that which is good. (22) Abstain from all appearance of evil. (23) And the very God of peace sanctify you wholly; and I pray God your whole spirit and soul and body be preserved blameless unto the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. (24) Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. |

9 | Discovering the will of God | Eph 2:10 | 1949 | 129010
Thanks for your answer. I understand that all scripture is for my instruction but I guess my question is this - I hear people I admire teach that prayer should be a two way coversation with God, as though God gives them specific direction. I hear others refer to seeking the will of God in this or that. I don't believe that I have ever had this kind of communication from God. Does this indicate that I am missing something or that I am not in His will? Does He have a particular intent for my life which I must somehow discover?

God doesn't usually answer us in an audible voice (although He can, if He see's fit). When it is said that Prayer is two-way communication with God, it simply means that we don't just bombard the Father with what WE want, but we listen to what He may want to tell us. Prayer is our primary way of communicating with God, but His Word (the Bible) is His PRIMARY way of communicating with us. Just sit in His presence during prayer and "listen" to the Holy Spirit. He may direct you to a certain Scripture that will be exactly what you need WHEN you need it. When I say LISTEN, I mean, just be still in His presence. Don't ask for anything, just meditate on His Grace and Mercy, His goodness, and He WILL speak to your Heart. God will show you His Will for your life, but it'll always be in steps. He never shows us His ENTIRE Will for our lives, because we'd somehow mess it all up with our Human intervention and finite thinking. :-) When you are obedient to God in Step #1, then He'll show you Step #2, and so on and so forth. Just remember to "listen" to the Voice of God. If you are filled with His Spirit, He'll speak to your Heart.

Very Well Said, brother. I personally believe people should get away from the " Hollywood" image of a personified God. and channel their thoughts and prayers to the Holy Spirit of our Divine Creator. Be still in His presence and wait. lookN4luv

I surely agree with you that the God we see in his word is not the Hollywood image! I'm really not expecting the voice of James Earl Jones from above to say "1949 go to this college not that one, major in this and not that and then I will be pleased with you". But - as I channel my thoughts and wait - what exactly am I waiting for? Where in scripture would you send me to read more about this?
13 | Discovering the will of God | Eph 2:10 | jelkins | 129180
Consider the two verses, below. If the whole duty of man is to fear God and keep his commandments, and if we must "continue in the teaching of Christ" ("abide in the doctrice of Christ" KJV) to have God, maybe you are just waiting to learn what the commandments/teachings are. The Holy Spirit guides you through the Word, but it is your responsibility to learn the Word -- the "milk" and then the "meat" (Heb 5:12,13; I Pet 2:2) The more you learn, the more the HS can speak to you through the Word. No easy way - just diligent/regular study. Eccliastes 12:13 "Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the whole duty of man." and 2 John 1:9 "Anyone who runs ahead and does not continue in the teaching of Christ does not have God; whoever continues in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.
