Dear Ceebee, Baptism was instituted by Jesus Christ as an ordinance of the church. For the person being baptized its intention is to be a sign of his fellowship with Christ in His death and resurrection. It is an external sign -- a confession to the church and to the world -- of the believer being engrafted into Christ and of the remission of sins. It indicates that the believer has given himself wholly up to God, through Jesus Christ, and that henceforth he may live and conduct himself "in newness of life."
