1 | was the 'other' refering to Peter? | Gal 1:6 | kw5kw | 162836 | ||
Can anyone give me the background information behind Paul's writing of Galatians? The history, the situations, who was the preacher of the 'other gospel' etc. I have heard that this preacher was Peter, any comments on that? Yea or nay? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks Russ |

Hi, Russ... Dr. Kim Riddlbarger gives a good introduction: http://www.christreformed.org/resources/sermons_lectures/00000044.shtml Of course, I'm also rather partial to these set of sermons on Galatians: http://www.biblebb.com/brefindex/gal.htm They are sermons given by Charles H. Spurgeon, Bishop J. C. Ryle, and Dr. John MacArthur. Galatians is a great epistle to study! As to the preacher of the "other gospel" you can be very confident that it was not Peter. Although there was an incident in which Peter was in some error with regard to Judaic practices being required by Christian (cf Gal 2:11; Acts 15:30-34), there would have been no period of time when he would have preached a false gospel. Of this passage, Jamieson, Fausset, and Brown write, "Paul's withstanding Peter is the strongest proof that the former gives of the independence of his apostleship in relation to the other apostles, and upsets the Romish doctrine of Peter's supremacy. The apostles were not always inspired; but were so always in writing the Scriptures. If then the inspired men who wrote them were not invariably at other times infallible, much less were the uninspired men who kept them. The Christian fathers may be trusted generally as witnesses to facts, but not implicitly followed in matters of opinion." In Him, Doc |
