1 | Immorality in the Church | 1 Cor 5:1 | Morant61 | 21279 | ||
Commentary........................................ This post was given in response to a question on another thread, but I wanted to attach it to 1 Cor. 5:1. Basically, 1 Cor. 5 deals with two problems. a) A man (a beliver in the church at Cornith) was apparently involved sexually with his step-mother (v. 1). I say step-mother because she is called his father's wife and not his mother. No one knows whether or not the father was still alive at this time. This is a sin according to Lev. 18:8 and there is some evidence that even the Roman world considered this to be immoral. b) The church at Cornith was not addressing the sin at all. In fact, they were proud out it for some unknown reason (v. 2). In the remainder of the chapter, Paul gives some general instructions concerning sinning members and some specific directions concerning this particular man. 1) In general, he says that "a little yeast works through the whole dough" (v. 5). I am familiar with this concept since I have 15 years experience as a baker. Therefore, he insists in verses 9 through 11 that churches should not have fellowship with those who are immoral. This would be a unique concept in today's world! 2) In particular, he insists that this man be expelled from the church (v. 13). Verse 5 is hotly debated. Some modern theories say, a) that the man had some disease. b) that Paul expected him to be put to death. The traditional view though is that he was to be expelled from the protection and fellowship of the church with the goal of bringing him back to God. In fact, there are some who believe that 2 Cor. 2:5-11 may refer to this very man! Whatever v. 5 means, the overall message is clear. The church cannot tolerate blatant immorality among it's members. Excellent study, my friend! Yes, I also agree that this man and all others like him who exhibit such blatant immorality must not be able to integrate with the church and therefore must be expelled from fellowship! The man needs to go back to his root problem, see his error in judgment, and repent of his sins before any action of reinstatement can ever be considered. But this whole society that we live in has been subjected to sexual enslavement, and we as Christians are doing little, if anything at all, to counteract this demonic advancement of sexual enslavement within our society. Of course, we can and should not let this enslavement infiltrate the church (even though it already has), and we MUST deal with it in every circumstance within the church when we find out that it has! We must protect our own territory from demonic possession and not give to Satan what was given to us by the Lord! To let sexual enslavement go "unchecked" within the body of the church is like playing "Russian roulette" with our spiritual lives! We must not let this be! If we let such a sin go "unchecked", then it won't be long until the same sin has invaded others within the family, and caused other men to commit sexual acts with their step-mothers or other daughters to have immoral relations with their step-fathers, all of which are sinful, sinful, sinful!! And this is so disheartening to a church, when the leadership is so lackadaisical and uncaring to let such a sin go unchecked!! Such lack of spiritual guidance just goes to show how far a pastor's spiritual judgment has crumbled and eroded under pressure! And believe me, the Satanic influence that has already "invited itself" into the church because of the sin will indeed provide much pressure against the pastor making a "right decision"! Whether that be from peer influence or worldly (societal) influence, there will be that pressure.. If the pastor or church body as a whole lets such a sin go unchecked, then not only have they failed the spiritual test, but they also have unwittingly broken themselves off from the True Vine that brings protection and order to such Spiritual chaos! And the Lord knows that the destruction or death of their spiritual lives is at hand, only to be brought down with one final blow of failure, like the one that this man went through: having immoral relations with his step-mother. So therefore, 1 Corinthians 5:1 is yet another example that Paul is pointing out to us of something that should be followed by action. If it is not, then only death and destruction follow, all with Satan's handprints. Did not Paul tell us not to give Satan a foothold? Satan will use every means at his disposal to find the small cracks and infiltrate the church- one by one.. Blessings to you, Nolan |

Greetings Nolan! Welcome back my friend! You wouldn't believe some of the things I've seen. I knew of a situation in a church once, where a man (in the church) was having an affair with a woman (in the church). He divorced his wife and married the other woman, and remained on the church board! I guess they never read 1 Cor. 5! :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
