"women keep silent in the churches" 1 Cor 14:34,35 'The principle of women not speaking in church services is universal; this applies to all the churches, not just locally, geographically, or culturally. The context in this verse concerns prophecy, but includes the general theme of the chapter, i.e., tongues. Rather than leading, they are to be submissive as God's Word makes clear. 'It is not coincidental that many modern churches that have tongues-speaking and claim gifts of healings and miracles also permit women to lead worship, preach, and teach. Women may be gifted teachers, but they are not permitted by God "to speak" in churches. In fact, for them to do so is "shameful," meaning "disgraceful." Apparently, certain women were out of order in disruptively asking questions publicly in the chaotic services.' (Source of quote available upon emailed request.) It should come as no surprise that the same individual(s) who reject(s) Biblical teaching on church discipline also reject(s) Biblical teaching on church order. |

As you stated the context about keeping silent in reference to asking questions disorderly is correct. To go beyond that is to make up your own anti-women doctrine not support by the context. I do not mean you personally but anyone that attempts to teach more than what is said here. Paul used the same terminology when he said ... 1 Corinthians 14:28 But if there be no interpreter, let him keep silence in the church; and let him speak to himself, and to God.... and again... 1 Corinthians 14:30 If any thing be revealed to another that sitteth by, let the first hold his peace. The same greek words and the same context so if a person would launch out on a "women cannot speak in the ministry gifts in the church false teaching" then it seems that there is just as much here to say a man cannot speak either. For twice the pronoun "He" is told to keep silent in the church and only once it says a woman should keep silent. So it seems to me that if you cannot understand the context based on "give place" or silence as in "yield the floor" or "do not disrupt" then you would at least apply the same error of heurmeneutics for the man that was told to keep silent in the church as well. I am being ludicrous to make the point that the instruction is that the women stop being disruptive.. not a ban on women in ministry. Here is proof that women were accepted in the new testament church as both teachers and ministers... Acts 21:9-11 And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy. And as we tarried there many days, there came down from Judaea a certain prophet, named Agabus. And when he was come unto us, he took Paul's girdle, and bound his own hands and feet, and said, Thus saith the Holy Ghost, So shall the Jews at Jerusalem bind the man that owneth this girdle, and shall deliver him into the hands of the Gentiles. This shows that in meeting together the women did operate in these gifts and it was a blessing to the body. May you also experience the edification that comes when all saints, both men and women allow the Spirit of God to operate through them in the mutual edification that comes only when we meet together corporately and let God have control. Romans 1:12 That is, that I may be comforted together with you by the mutual faith both of you and me. |

Proof that women preached, taught? Scribe: "Acts 21:9-11 And the same man had four daughters, virgins, which did prophesy." "Proof that women were accepted in the new testament church as both teachers and ministers"? 'Luke does not reveal the nature of their prophesy. They may have had an ongoing prophetic ministry, or prophesied only once. Since women are not to be preachers or teachers in the church (1 Cor 14:34-36; 1 Tim 2:11,12), they probably ministered to individuals.' (Source of quote available upon emailed request.) From Scribes comment: "it seems that there is just as much here to say a man cannot speak either. For twice the pronoun "He" is told to keep silent in the church and only once it says a woman should keep silent." ...Your comments? In the Corithian church the men were seated at the front and the women were way in the back. There were no sound systems like they have today, so the apostle would speak, and the women would yell up to their husbands, "What did he say?" This was disrupting the meeting, so Paul instructed for the men to relay the information to the women at home. Galatians 3:28 makes it clear that "in Christ" there is neither male nor female. So this must mean then that some of the people "in Christ" are not allowed to teach others about Him when God tells us specifically in Joel 2:28 that in the end times He "will pour out His Spirit on ALL flesh; your sons and your daughters will prophecy.....Even on the male and female slaves in those days, will I pour out my spirit". So I must assume that some of those that God pours out His spirit on must remain quiet? Luke 2:36 speaks of a prophetess named Anna. One role of a prophet is to speak into the lives of other believers. It is doubtful that the apostle Paul would be saying to silence Anna, or other female believers who had something to contribute. (A previous contribution to the forum.) If it truly was fact that women were not supposed to preach and teach I wonder how many of our brothers and sisters would still be lost in sin.......God can and will use all people in all places. prayon, With my hands lifted up and my mouth filled with praise, with a heart of thanksgiving, I will bless the LORD! Praise the LORD! Just a note to say that I think your post is GREAT! The woman that led me to Jesus, my spiritual mother, and, I am a male, was silent in the church, ACCEPT, when it came to teachings in Sunday school class that swayed from the Word of GOD, and, when she was asked to stand in for our pastor to preach. What a wonderful woman God made. I thank Him for her. She would not allow me to be misled by man's wisdom, or, by teachings that swayed from God's Word. She spoke up! Cyclist I will bless the Lord at all times! His praise shall continually be in my mouth! |
