Hi Devon, Concerning the office and role of the prophet within the Church: Eph 4:11 And he gave some, apostles; and some, prophets; and some, evangelists; and some, pastors and teachers; Eph 4:12 For the perfecting of the saints, for the work of the ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ: Eph 4:13 Till we all come in the unity of the faith, and of the knowledge of the Son of God, unto a perfect man, unto the measure of the stature of the fulness of Christ: Eph 4:14 That we henceforth be no more children, tossed to and fro, and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the sleight of men, and cunning craftiness, whereby they lie in wait to deceive; Eph 4:15 But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ: I would ask you, does it seem to you that we are in unity of faith and the knowledge of the Son of God? When does our full knowledge of Jesus come? When will we achieve the full stature that Jesus has? 1 John 3:2 Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. Not until we see Him. Are there still those in the Church blown about by every wind of doctrine? If the answer is yes, then prophets are for today. Love in Christ, Mark |

Hi Brad, I could drop a couple of names, but these are not men you would know. I am not talking about those with weekly shows in TBN, or who will sell you a CD of this month's prophecy. I am talking about men who serve as elders in the church, and who will speak with authority regarding the direction of the local assembly. There was the man, who was a pastor of a church, who, before I was saved, and while I was in strong rebellion against God, prophesied to me concerning God's plans for me. I am speaking of those who step up to the crowd on the beach, and preach with power the word of God, who teach the congregation with the power and authority that God gives them. How do they operate? In proportion to their faith, I would suppose. They speak as God gives them words to speak, to the extent that they believe those words to be from God. Love in Christ, Mark |

Salutations, Mark. Your perspective on modern-day prophets interests me, and I just must pick your brain (what a gross metaphor!). If you will, compare what you invisage as a prophet today with the prophets of old. Today we have the complete written word of Jesus Christ; the ancient prophets did not. Does this in any way change the dynamics, the job description, if you will, of a prophet today? Can you, in fact, produce incontrovertible scriptural evidence that prophets exist in the this age? How could one recognize a prophet if he should meet one? I happen to be a sola scriptura guy, and as such view the likelihood of meeting a prophet this side of heaven with an enormous amount of skepticism based on my study and understanding of Scripture; as, for example, Hebrews 1:1,2. Tell me, if you can and will, wherein I err. One parting comment, Mark. I cannot see that your illustration of a pastor who, in your words "prophesied to me concerning God's plans for me" validates your position on modern-day prophets or lends credence to your contention of their existence. Neither does it address the issue of what the Bible teaches on the topic. Cordially, and with every good wish that God will bless you and your family richly. --Hank
5 | dear friend | 1 Cor 14:29 | eklektos | 173625
Greetings Hank, You reference Heb 1:1,2 as tied to the dialog about prophets. The context of what Paul is saying in these verses is the explaining of a Higher authority, compared to the prophets of old, that has now come from God and has spoken to us. And the answer to the context of Hebrews 1 is explained in Hebrews 2:1, "Therefore we ought to give the more earnest heed to the things which we have heard...". For now, it is not man, moved by the Spirit, speaking the things of God but Jesus Himself, God's only begotten, that has spoken the things of God. Hebrews 1 is talking about authority not prophets per say. Also my brother, you state: "Can you, in fact, produce incontrovertible scriptural evidence that prophets exist in the this age?". I would ask, since Scripture says that they do where is the Scriptural evidence when they stopped. I know this has been around the barn a few times but mainly I was concerned with the Hebrews reference. by Grace eklektos |

eklektos: Thanks for your response to my post. Surely the fault, dear eklektos, lies not in your post but in myself, that I am too dense to discern whether you're agreeing with my position or challenging it. --Hank

Hi Hank, The gist of your dialog with Mark has been whether or not prophets are a function of the church today and what Scriptural evidence is there if any. You stated to Mark, "I happen to be a sola scriptura guy, and as such view the likelihood of meeting a prophet this side of heaven with an enormous amount of skepticism based on my study and understanding of Scripture; as, for example, Hebrews 1:1,2." I took your reference to Hebrews to mean that there are no prophets in present day. Although, I also would be skeptical and would have to hear what the prophet was saying. I am also aware that just because the lightening does not strike in my back yard does not mean there are no storms in the rest of the world. For I find nowhere in the Scriptures that the Holy Spirit has stopped using any of the gifts given to man. by Grace eklektos |
