What does this verse mean when it says that speaking in tounges is a sign not for believers but for unbelievers? Does this mean that it is the unbelievers that speak in tounges and not the believers? | ||||||

rhy The tongues referred to in this verse is the tongue given with the expectation of an interpretation (1 Cor 12:10). In the church that I attend, an Assemblies of God church, when a message in tongues in given the whole church stops what it is doing and becomes silent. The non believer in the congregation is listening to the voice speaking in a language that cannot be understood and observing the actions of the congregation. The congregation is praying for an interpretation of the message in tongues and waiting expectantly for that message. The interpretation of the message is given in the language of the congregation. The non believer sees the unknown tongue and the interpretation as a sign from God. The believer sees the interpretation as a message from the lips of God. It is akin to prophecy. "This is supernatural utterance in the native tongue (1 Cor. 14:3). It is a miracle of divine utterance, not conceived by human thought or reasoning (Acts 3:21; Acts 11:28; Acts 21:11; 2 Peter 1:21; 1 Cor. 14:23-32). It includes speaking to people to edification, and exhortation and comfort (1 Cor. 14:3).(Dakes Annotated Bible)" The whole experience is a sign to the non believer that GOD IS. To the believer the understandable message is one of edification. The gift of "tongues with interpretation" is a gift of the Holy Spirit. I THINK that a nonbeliever would not be willing to be used by the Holy Spirit in susch a way. The person whose mouth is speaking the words is not comprising the message. The Spirit of God is using the mouth, of a willing participant, to speak His Words. First in a language we don't understand and second in one we do. On the other hand, My God can do anything. This gift is for believers. I hope this answers your question. Asis |
