1 | A bit confused regarding tongues | 1 Cor 14:22 | Dragonfly | 109024
I refer you to 1st Corinthians:12:28-31;"And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly DESIRE the greater gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way." Emphasis on "deire" is mine. How do you answer the afore cited questions? I believe the only answer is no, not all have any one or more of the gifts mentioned. My impression of the penecostal movement is that contrary to the above they put greater emphasis on the lesser gift. How about the more excellent way of 1st Corinthians, chapter 13?

Once again you guys blast us without knowing facts. There is acording to the word of God a GIFT of tongues, which we "pentecostals" refer to as tongues and interpretation. And then there is the gift of the Holy Ghost with evidence speaking in tongues. In 1 Corinthians they he is speaking of the GIFT of tongues (tongues and interpretation) In the Book of Acts it was The HOLY GHOST SPEAKING IN TONGUES. PLEASE rather than just jumping to assumptions ASK. I would be HAPPY to tell you what I believe

punkledo - You write (virtually shout), "In the Book of Acts it was The HOLY GHOST SPEAKING IN TONGUES." If you don't mind, please cite specific instances, chapter and verse, in which the Holy Spirit Himself actually spoke in tongues. And by the way, what exactly is your definition of "tongues" as in the phrase "speaking in tongues"? Thank you in advance for your clarifying response, punkledo. --Hank

The holy ghost speaking in tongues as in the holy ghost with the evidence of speaking in tongues. Acts 2:1-4 (Acts 2:38-39 the promise of the holy ghost) Acts 2:33 (the Holy Ghost you see and HEAR!!) Acts 8:12-20 (The Holy Ghost was always made manifest with speaking in tongues.) Acts 10:44-46 (the gift of the holy ghost was evident the bible says because they HEARD them speak with tongues) Romans 8:16 (the spirit bears witness that we are children of God) 1 Corinthians 14:18 (Paul said he speaks in tongues more than all) 1 Corinthians 14 CEV (Usually I use the KJV, however I thought it was interesting contemporary English version says UNKNOWN Languages.) 21In the Scriptures the Lord says,"I will use strangers who speak UNKNOWN languages to talk to my people. They will speak to them in foreign languages, but still my people won't listen to me." |

punkledo - So do I infer correctly that you are willing to admit that the biblical definition of 'tongues' in the passages you cited refers to languages and not to ecstatic babblings? If that's what you mean, then we're in blissful agreement! --Hank

First of all Hank, You should be very careful about what you say about the Holy Ghost (Mark 3:29). On the other hand I am not sure that you can blaspheme the Holy Ghost without actually having the Holy Ghost. Secondly, the word of God does not say it is a KNOWN language. It is a heavenly language Hank. The apostles in Acts 2 were in one accord and they all spoke the EXACT same thing in tongues. Yet all of the people understood what they were saying. It is my belief they were speaking in the heavenly language and God opened the understanding of those that were listening. How eles could the apostles be speaking ONE thing in one accord (unison) and every man understand? IT IS GOD!! There were like 50 different languages there. Thirdly, the bible says in the last days perilous times will come and that there will be people who have a form of Godliness but deny the power and to turn away from such. (1 tim 3:5) And it says they will be EVER LEARNING but NEVER coming to the knowledge of the truth. (1tim 3:7) I feel like that is the way that some people in this study forum are. Always learning, and asking things that prolly never would have crossed my mind, but are unable to come to the knowledge of the truth. All I ask of the people in this forum is RATHER than blast a doctrine, find out about it's biblical roots. Rather than "cast stones" please ask me. My dad use to say people who live in glass houses should not cast stones. I could find plenty wrong with MOST of what is said in this forum. 60percent of it is OPINION or someone thinking they have a secret interpretation and not bible (1peter 1:20). The Holy Ghost is my power. It is my Helmet of Salvation. I know it is real. So you can live in the dream land that you are right all you want to. You have no biblical foundation. When someone finally shakes you out of that dream world, you will see the truth. And my dad has always had this saying "You have the right to be wrong." Natasha |

pukiedo, Might I ask in the spirit of love and cooperation that you tone down the overt hostility? You are treading on a "doctrinal bias" which has been debated numerous times on this Forum... to no resolve. I would offer Romans 14:1 as our guide "...but not to disputes over doubtful things." This is one of those "doubtful" things with true believers on both sides:-) Part of (spiritual) maturity is to agree to disagree, agreeably! Emotions aside, you will not convince anyone against their will by banter or derision. There is simply no call to accuse Hank of blaspheming the Holy Spirit because he challenges or disagrees with you! That's way out of context. Further, to use the passages from 1 Timothy to support your argument also shows lack of regard for context:-) Finally, when you state " All I ask of the people in this forum is RATHER than blast a doctrine, find out about it's biblical roots." What makes you think fellow Forum members haven't? That's pretty presumptuous, don't you think? You might consider your father's own advice "You have the right to be wrong." The door swings both ways, my sister! Speaking The Truth In Love, BradK |
