NASB | 1 Corinthians 14:22 So then tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophecy is for a sign, not to unbelievers but to those who believe. |
AMPLIFIED 2015 | 1 Corinthians 14:22 Therefore, [unknown] tongues are [meant] for a [supernatural] sign, not to believers but to unbelievers [who might be receptive]; while prophecy [foretelling the future, speaking a new message from God to the people] is not for unbelievers but for believers. |
Subject: A bit confused regarding tongues |
Bible Note: I refer you to 1st Corinthians:12:28-31;"And God has appointed these in the church: first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, administrations, varieties of tongues. Are all apostles? Are all prophets? are all teachers? Are all workers of miracles? Do all have gifts of healing? Do all speak with tongues? Do all interpret? But earnestly DESIRE the greater gifts. And yet I show you a more excellent way." Emphasis on "deire" is mine. How do you answer the afore cited questions? I believe the only answer is no, not all have any one or more of the gifts mentioned. My impression of the penecostal movement is that contrary to the above they put greater emphasis on the lesser gift. How about the more excellent way of 1st Corinthians, chapter 13? |
