1 | What is the Gift of God in Ephes, 2:8,9 | 1 Cor 12:9 | CDBJ | 219191 | ||
Paul in writing Ephes. 2:8,9 uses in the formation of these verses what is called a parataxis. With this in mind what actually is the gift of God “according to Scripture”? Ephes. 2:8-9 For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9Not of works, lest any man should boast. CDBJ |

Hi CDBJ, Since the third gift of the Spirit listed in 1 Cor 12, is faith, it looks very much to me (according to Scripture) that it is that ("wonder-working") saving faith, given to us by His amazing grace. Saving faith is the gift of God, and what a wonderful gift it is! :-) John |

Hi John, The faith, that I suppose, you are referring to is found in, 1 Cor. 12:9 To another faith by the same Spirit; to another the gifts of healing by the same Spirit; It is logical to assume that the “faith” spoken of here is a reference to a different faith then that spoken of by Paul in Ephes. 2:8 since the faith given as a gift, it not given to all but to some, or as Paul says it, to another. The gifts given in I Cor. 12 are disseminated by the Holy Spirit to those who have “already” come under the category of believer or sons, i.e. they have already exercised “saving faith” in Christ or they couldn’t receive the special gifts enumerated by Paul in I Cor. 12. Excellent point, CDBJ, and I'd have to agree with you on that. So, nix the Scripture reference, but I still think the gift of God spoken of here in Ephes 2:8-9 is faith and I suppose grace would be considered a gift as well sense it's something we get that is unmerited. That would be a gift too, by definition. What's your take on it, Brother? John |
