I was raised in the Episcopal church but I never really found a personal relationship with Jesus until I went to a church with a free form of worship. The Episcopal church is very close to the Anglican or Church of England. The Episcopal churches I've been to are very liturgical in their worship services. Most of the time the Bible is not even brought to the service. The minister may read from it, but the congragation follows and recites sections from "The Book of Common Prayer" The minister reads one line and the congragation answers with the next. The music is done the same way, with the choir singing one or two verses and the congragation singing the next couple. It has been a long time since I attended the Episcopal church regularly, but when I did it seemed like the congragation was not encouraged to read the Bible on their own very much. They were only encouraged to memorize certain verses like the 23rd Psalm and the Lord's Prayer (and the Apostles Creed, which is not a Bible verse but a statement of belief). It may be different now. In many larger Episcopal churches the services are very pomp and beautiful. They remind you of something you might see in the royal palaces of England. A visitor to an Episcopal church may find it difficult to follow the cues for standing, sitting, neeling and reciting. I believed that a new Christian or someone searching for truth will be more well served by going to a church with a more free form of worship. A church that encourages a personal relationship with Jesus and the individual study of the Bible. A Christian who already understands his relationship with Jesus and the Bible may get more enjoyment from the beauty of the Episcopal services. This is, of course, only my opinion. It is possible that some people may come to know Christ through these kinds of services. |
