1 | Given what to drink?Made to drink of? | 1 Cor 12:13 | Ray | 132916
Reference #132878 Hi Tim, What version were you quoting for 1 Corinthians 12:13? I am wondering about "and we were all given the one Spirit to drink". What are we to drink? King James, "and have been all made to drink into one Spirit". NKJ, "and have all been made to drink into [NU omits into] one Spirit." NASB, "and we were made to drink of one Spirit." Greetings Ray! Sorry about that! I was quoting from the NIV. Of the translations you listed, I would go with the NASB's traslation. There is no 'into' in the Greek text. It literally says, "...and all one Spirit we were given to drink." In this case, 'drink' most likely refers to 'take part in' or 'to participate in'. This is the sense in which this verb is used in Rev. 14:8, "A second angel followed and said, 'Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great, which made all the nations drink the maddening wine of her adulteries.'" Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

How about we are all baptized "by the agency of the same Spirit?" (1 Corinthians 12:7 and 11) Thus we are living stones, fitted together into one body. (Ephesians 2:16 and 21-22)
4 | Given what to drink?Made to drink of? | 1 Cor 12:13 | Ray | 132973
Hi Doctrinsograce, I like your references. Ephesians 2:20, "having been built upon the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together is growing into a holy temple in the Lord/." 1 Corinthians 12:13b, "...and we were all made ot drink of one Spirit...18 But now God has placed the member, each one of them, in the body, just as He desired... 24b But God/ has so composed the body, giving more abundant honor to that member which lacked, 25 that there should be no division in the body, but that the members should have the same care for one another." I think that the passages stress that we should be fitted together into a holy temple in the Lord; that there be no divisions among us. From the heart, Ray |

I agree, brother Ray. Ephesians up to this point is about God's eternal purpose. He is building a temple, a dwelling place for Himself. However, He has two main problems: Dead people (2:5a) and divided people (2:12). So first He makes dead people alive (2:5b-6a) and then He draws divided people together (2:13b-19). Imagine, God has made us a part of a Plan: What kind of thing have any men been involved in that can compare? Which one of us have ever been involved in a plan that spanned decades, let alone centuries, or millenia? Yet this incredible Plan of God's spans eternity itself! No wonder Paul can hardly contain himself. It is as though he runs out of superlatives! Sorry... didn't mean to get us off the subject! In Him, Doc |

Hi Doctrinsograce, I think that you have a good observation with your dead people and divided people. As an aside, the NKJ has reading for Ephesians 2:1, "And you [He made alive] who were in trespasses and sins,..." However, I would interpret/translate that "He made alive" as being rightfully in verse 5. Ephesians 2:5, "even when we were dead in our transgressions He made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved)." From the heart,Ray |
