While I’m not exactly sure what expansiate is, let me explain speaking in tongues. In Acts 2:5-8 And there were dwelling in Jerusalem Jews, devout men, from every nation under heaven. [6] And when this sound occurred, the multitude came together, and were confused, because everyone heard them speak in his own language. [7] Then they were all amazed and marveled, saying to one another, "Look, are not all these who speak Galileans? [8] And how is it that we hear, each in our own language in which we were born? Here we see the disciples of Jesus speaking and people hearing in their own language. There is some debate here whether the disciples were speaking in the other tongues or if they were speaking most probably in Aramaic and the hearer heard them in their own language. In any case this is one example of tongues. Later in Acts 10:45-46 And those of the circumcision who believed were astonished, as many as came with Peter, because the gift of the Holy Spirit had been poured out on the Gentiles also. [46] For they heard them speak with tongues and magnify God. Then Peter answered, In this case the people upon salvation began to speak in tongues, in this case means they were speaking another language unknown by them or hearer. Then in 1 Cor. 13:1 Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, but have not love, I have become sounding brass or a clanging cymbal. Paul alludes to speaking in the tongue of angels or an unknown language. Later he says 1 Cor. 14:14 For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful. Again we see a reference to an unknown language. Therefore we have to conclude that speaking in tongues is speaking in your native tongue while being understood by someone that doesn’t speak that language. Speaking in a language you don’t know. And lastly speaking in an unknown or heavenly language that may or may not be interpreted by yourself or others. Many say this gift has passed away based on 1 Cor. 13:8-11 Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away. [9] For we know in part and we prophesy in part. [10] But when that which is PERFECT has come, then that which is in part will be done away. [11] When I was a child, I spoke as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child; but when I became a man, I put away childish things. (emphasis on perfect mine) To me everything hinges on the word “perfect”. Many see the meaning of perfect as the closing of the cannon of the New Testament. However I see this as meaning Jesus’ return. In any case there are those that practice speaking in tongues and those that don’t. I have heard of two times where tongues were spoken I can say without a doubt it was God. One case was a man that preached in English but was heard in Spanish by a woman that spoke only Spanish. She accepted the Lord. Another case involved a man that spoke an unknown language to a man that understood it, it was a dialect of Cherokee. I have also heard many similar cases of this happening with missionaries, therefore I don’t think it has past away yet. In any case in the churches today there is a real problem, one we reject it and refuse to consider it yet as I said there seems to be authentic cases happening even as we speak. Or two we seek the gift and forget about God. In many Pentecostal churches I get the impression that the gifts and manifestations of the Spirit are what matters. God is second. I hope this helps EdB |

Mr. EdB has posted an excellent explanation of spiritual gifts, including speaking in tongues but it seems to me there's just one thing missing. Correct me if I'm mistaken as I might be but isn't the following true? There's not one single instance in the NT other than in Acts 2 with the establishment of the church and Acts 10 with Cornelius, where people in the NT received this miraculous powers ONLY with the laying on of hands by the Apostles? As a matter of fact, Acts 8 makes this very plain. There, people were baptized and became christians and then only after the laying on of hands by the Apostles did they received these kinds of miraculous powers. The baptism of the Holy Spirit in Acts 2 and 10 was done for very specific reasons, 1) to establish the church and 2) to endorse the sharing of this Gospel message with Gentiles as well as Jews, respectively. Since we have no more living Apostles amongst us, it's difficult to believe in the modern manifestation of miracles from common men and women, even christians in today's world. Again, I may be mistaken, if so please feel free to correct me. Blessings to you. Country Girl |

Greetings Country Girl! Since Acts is the Acts of the Apostles, it only makes sense that every recorded instance involves the Apostles. :-) However, there is nothing in Scripture that limits the gifts of the Spirit to only those who were touched by the Apostles. It is difficult to base a doctrine upon narrative, rather than proscriptive passages. Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

But we are in agreement on my main point...that there is no instance in the whole NT other than Acts 2 and 10, where christians manifested these powers WITHOUT the laying on of hands from the Apostles. Since Luke makes mention of this fact and the absence of any other source throughout the balance of the NT, it seems pretty clear to me. Does anyone else have an opinion or scripture to add to the discussion? Blessings to you. Country Girl |

Hello Country Girl; The fact that there is even one example of the gift being given without the laying on of hands by the apostles indicates that it can happen that way. Just because there are very few other examples of it happening that way does not indicate it doesn't happen or that God has stopped doing it that way. The Bible is a very small book to contain the ways of a Very big God. Just because something is not repeated over and over and over again it does not void an issue. Blessing to you. |
