songbirdca, A very good exegesis of the passage! Thank you. You are quite correct that "All believers share the reality of being baptized by the Spirit." One of my main points of contention with everyone having the gift of tongues, is that scripture explicitly says otherwise.(1 Cor. 12:30) While I can certainly agree that tongues is a gift- it is by no means the ONLY one or the GREATEST! There was a limitation for the gifts of the Holy Spirit-1 Cor 13:8-13. That which is perfect is the Written Word of God-James 1:25-perfect law of liberty, James 2:12-judged by the law of liberty. The purpose of the mircles and gifts was to bear witness that the speaker was from God-Hebrews 2:1-4. At this day and time we can compare what a person says to the completed Word of God, a study of which will make the man of completely equipped for God's work-2 Tim 3:16-17. The special gifts were for teaching and confirming the Word spoken-Eph. 4:13-TIL we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God. That time is past and the manmade denominations are the source of the confussion not God-1 Cor 14:33. Since the Word of God completely equips the mana of God, why do we need miracles, tongues, and prophecy? We do not and we need to be aware of false teachers-Gal. 1 :6-9, the false teachers are to be accursed. The Gospel was once delivered-Jude 3-which means there are not further revelations coming from God. So the source of these revelations, gifts, tongues, etc, that the denominations claim are from some other source--??satan?? The Word confirms they are not from God. | ||||||
