2 | Baptism of the Holy Spirit after reborn? | 1 Cor 12:13 | kalos | 3539
1) Upon salvation we are baptized (placed) into the body of Christ by the Holy Spirit(1 Cor 12:13). ...The same verse in the Amplified Bible reads: "For by [means of the personal agency of] one [Holy] Spirit we were all...baptized [and by baptism united together] into one body, and all made to drink of one [Holy] Spirit." . . . 2) Also, at the time of our salvation, we are indwelt by the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:9). . . . 3) We must realize that those first disciples did not receive the Holy Spirit until the Day of Pentecost, because the Holy Spirit had not yet been given. . . . 4) Pentecost was a one-time, never to be repeated event in the history of the church. Now there is no need to wait or tarry to receive the indwelling Holy Spirit. This was only true of the first (pre-Pentecost) disciples/believers. . . . What exactly happened at Pentecost?" "The disciples did not actually receive the Holy Spirit until the day of Pentecost." Acts 2:4 *filled with the Holy Spirit.* "In contrast to the baptism with the Spirit, which is the one-time act by which God places believers into His Body (1 Cor 12:13), the filling is a repeated reality of Spirit-controlled behavior that God commands believers to maintain. Peter and many others in Acts 2 were filled with the Spirit again (e.g., Acts 4:8,31; 6:5; 7:55) and so spoke boldly the Word of God. The fullness of the Spirit affects all areas of life, not just speaking boldy (compare Eph 5:19-33)" (p. 1635, MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997). . . . To be "filled with" the Spirit means to be "controlled and empowered by" the Spirit. . . . I might add that while all believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:9 "...Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His."), it is obvious that not all believers at all times are *filled* (controlled and empowered) by the Spirit. |

Dear friend: The following is the closest I can come to giving answers WITH proper Scripture support and documentation. It answers the question "How is one filled with the Spirit -- by prayer?" While not giving a formula for being filled with the Spirit, it does give the conditions for being filled. As to when one receives the gifts of the Spirit, that one is a little harder to answer with chapter and verse. The best answer I can give is that every believer has some gift(s). When he/she received the gift(s) is something for which I cannot cite a clear verse of Scripture. That doesn't mean that no such verse exists; it just means that if it does, I don't know what the verse is. . . . (The following is quoted from page 2064, the Ryrie Study Bible Expanded Edition, Moody, 1986, 1995.) . . . "IX. THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT. . . . A. DEFINITION. A spiritual gift is a God-given ability for service. It is not a place of service nor a ministry to an age group nor a procedure. . . . B. DISTRIBUTION. 1) *Source* -- the Spirit (1 Cor 12:11). 2) *Extent*. Every believer has some but not all gifts (1 Pet 4:10). ... . . . C. DEVELOPMENT. Abilities can and must be developed by the one to whom given; e.g., the gift of teaching needs development by study. . . . D. DESCRIPTION. Lists of gifts are found in Rom 12:6-8; 1 Cor 12:8-10; 28-20; Eph 4:11. . . . X. THE FILLING OF THE SPIRIT. . . . A. DEFINITION. Being filled means being controlled by the Spirit (Eph 5:18). . . . B. CHARACTERISTICS. 1) Filling is commanded (Eph 5:18, the verb is imperative). 2) Filling is repeated (Acts 2:4; 4:31). 3) Filling produces Christlikeness (Gal 5:22-23). . . . C. CONDITIONS FOR BEING FILLED. . . . 1) *A dedicated life*. Yielding to the Spirit's control, though commanded, is voluntary and necessitates an act of dedication. This includes two aspects: initial dedication (Rom 12:1-2) and continual dedication of one's life (Rom 8:14). 2) *An undefeated life*. Victory over sin in daily experience is necessary in being controlled by the Spirit (Eph 4:30). This means responding to the light of the Word as it is continually revealed (1 John 1:7). 3) *A dependent life* (Gal 5:16). . . . D. CONSEQUENCES. Being filled or controlled by the Spirit means: 1) A Christlike character (Gal 5:22-23). 2) Worship and praise (Eph 5:18-20). 3) Submissiveness (Eph 5:21). 4) Service (John 7:37-39)." . . . 5 | Gifts of the Spirit - baptism or filled? | 1 Cor 12:13 | Ray | 3554
Hi friends, Is this a good time to consider the difference between the gift and the Giver? I've had a question posted about the "Holy Spirit or the holy spirit" and this question deals with that question I believe. Let me throw in some thoughts. I don't see any 'control' in any of the scriptures mentioned here. I see fruit of the Spirit, live and walk by the Spirit, I see led by the Spirit, but I see no control in being filled with the Spirit, and certainly no control in being filled with spirits and being uncontrollably drunk with wine. What I see, is "that you be renewed in the spirit of your mind." (Ephesians 4:23) "And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect." (Rom 12:2)...as God has allotted to each a measure of faith." Rom 12:3 One of the scriptures about being filled with the holy spirit, concerns Stephen, a man full of faith and filled with the holy spirit. We all aren't filled with the same amount of faith and we don't always have any faith but we are expected to have it aren't we. I believe that we are given the spirit without measure. John 3:34 says, "For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God; for He gives the Spirit without measure."NASB I would make that a small s. John 4:10 says, "you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."...John 4:14 "but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him shall never thirst; but the water that I will give him will become in him a well of water springing up to eternal life." John 7:38 "He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, 'From his innermost being will flow rivers of living water.'" But this He spoke of the Spirit..." If we are to be filled with the holy spirit, we have to believe in Him and study the scriptures. He gives the spirit without measure. He gives us the words of God. And faith cometh by hearing. John 4:10 "If you knew the gift of God and who it (He) is who says to you 'Give Me a drink,' you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water." Later, Ray |

6 | Please tell me: What does "filled" mean? | 1 Cor 12:13 | kalos | 3559
In previous postings, no one was questioning what word ("filled") was used in Scripture. The implied question is: What does the word "filled" MEAN? What good does it do anyone to quote the words of the Bible, if they don't know what those words mean? . . . "DEFINITION: Being filled means being controlled by the Spirit (Eph 5:18)." . . . My question for Ray is: If "being filled" does not mean "being controlled by", then what does it mean? YOU TELL ME: IN *one or two words*, WHAT DOES "BEING FILLED" MEAN? . . . ONE OR TWO WORDS, please. This is a simple question that does not require a 300-word essay. Can you or can you not answer my simple question as I asked it? |

Joh 14:17 "the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and WILL BE IN YOU. (disciples will recieve indwelling of HS) Joh 20:22 And when He had said this, He breathed on them, and said to them, "Receive the Holy Spirit. (disciples recieve indwelling of HS) Act 1:5 "for John truly baptized with water, but you shall be baptized with the Holy Spirit not many days from now." (promise of filling of HS) Remember the diciples already have HS living in them, but they are not FILLED. Act 1:8 "But you shall receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you; (promise of filling of HS) Act 2:4 And they were all FILLED with the Holy Spirit and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance. (filling of HS)

But in ONE OR TWO WORDS, what does "being filled" mean"? I say again: we know that Scripture uses the word "filled", but what does that word "mean"? While all believers are *indwelt* by the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:9), it is obvious that not all believers at all times are *controlled* by the Spirit. If "being filled" does not mean "being controlled by", then what does it mean? YOU TELL ME: IN *one or two words*, WHAT DOES "BEING FILLED" MEAN? . . . ONE OR TWO WORDS, please. This is a simple question that does not require a 300-word essay. Can you or can you not answer my simple question as I asked it? |

Hi JVH, I can't give you a two or three word answer right now, but I'm working on it, OK? I'm just a searcher like everyone else. But I'll be looking at the seven places where the filling is. We're not talking fallen on, indwelling of, led of, receiving of, but being filled with right? But hopefully we'll learn not of the word, but its power. Later, Ray
14 | Please tell me: What does "filled" mean? | 1 Cor 12:13 | Ray | 3629
Hi JVH, There are nine passages that say "filled with the Holy Spirit" and one "filled with the Spirit". I noticed that John the baptizer was filled wih the Holy Spirit while yet in his mother's womb and scripture was quoted of what he would do. Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and spoke of the fruit of the womb which might be a quote from the Psalms. Zacharias was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied and quoted scripture. Jesus was filled with the Holy Spirit and quoted scripture to fight temptation. Now I don't believe that Jesus will be full of Himself here. Would it be plausible to make the Holy Spirits so far into holy spirit. In other words, they used the holy spirit of the word of God. What do you think? Later, Ray
