RevC: I appreciate your reply. Let's see if I can clarify what I previously wrote. Let me begin by saying that nothing in this reply is intended in any way to be argumentative or disrespectful to you personally, sir. I very much respect your interpretation of the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I present my understanding of the subject for your consideration. Some of this, but not all of it, may be a repetition of what I previously wrote. However, bear with me, please. Let me begin by saying there are three things to keep in mind here: 1) My main point is: There is ONE baptism, but MANY fillings. 2) Because the Bible itself makes a distinction between "baptized by the Holy Spirit" and "filled with the Holy Spirit", we too must make a distinction between the two terms. Baptized and filled do not both mean the same thing. Filled is not just another way of saying baptized. 3) We don't prove the Bible by experience. Instead, we prove experience by the Bible. 1 Cor 12:13 NASB For by one Spirit we were all baptized into one body, whether Jews or Greeks, whether slaves or free, and we were all made to drink of one Spirit. The Bible in 1 Cor 12:13 says: "By one Spirit we were all baptized." Notice that this verse, in contrast with Acts 2:4, DOES use both Spirit and baptized in one sentence. This is how we were initially placed into the body of Christ. It ocurred to each of us ONCE -- when we received Christ as Savior and were born again. QUESTION: Since "by one Spirit we were all baptized" (when we were placed into the body of Christ), then what else could the baptism in, of, by, or with the Holy Spirit be? Surely there are not 2 or more different kinds of Holy Spirit baptism, are there? Also note that in Acts 2:4, the text there does not say: "And they were all baptized with the Holy Spirit." It uses the word "filled". "And they were all FILLED (emphasis mine) with the Holy Spirit." Filled, not baptized. Not according to the plain text of the Scripture. (Please don't misunderstand me. I have not taken a stand for or against the gift of tongues. So far I have not said one thing about tongues. What I am talking about is the difference between "baptized" and "filled.") So, each individual believer is baptized by the Holy Spirit (placed into the body of Christ) ONCE, when he is born again and first becomes a Christian. However, the filling with the Spirit is a repeated reality in the life of the believer. I.e., there is ONE BAPTISM, BUT MANY FILLINGS. The fullness of the Spirit affects all areas of life, not just speaking boldly. Also note the Bible teaches that ALL believers are indwelt by the Holy Spirit (Rom 8:9). --JVH0212 |

JVH0212... You are not at all argumenative and I do not take you that way. On the contrary I appreciate your input very much. I am undecided on the issue. I recieved what i will call the baptism of the Holy Spirit and it was a very real and empowering experience for me tht has chnged my life. i also see a pattern in the book of Acts that leads me to believe that there is a seperate experience that follows those who believe. I have come up and out of the apostolic church(UPCI) which teaches some one must speak in tongues to be saved.(period!) That is not my personal view at this time..however I am sure you can see the wrestling that I am doing.... I do believe there is some sort of subsequent action that happens. I know in the Samaria experience the words or phrase use was "as He had not fallen on any of them yet" What does that mean!!! (Come on Luke give me some more info) It is my desire to walk in truth, and to know the truth of God's word...any insight or interpretation is appreciated and is not seen as an attack and pleae regard my comments in the same manner... So any though on the samarian experience or the house of Cornelius...I look forward to your reply

RevC: Thank you for a very kind and sincere reply. And I very much appreciate your explaining to me where you are coming from. The question(s) in your most previous posting, "JVH0212... You are not at all argumentative," will take a little time to answer. But I will answer you as best I can. Look for another reply later today, hopefully. Again I appreciate you and your sincere desire to discover the clear Bible teaching on this issue. God bless you. --JVH0212
