1 | Why do we take communion? | 1 Cor 11:26 | Glenn Brown | 93765
What is the 3rd reason that we "eat of the bread and drink of the cup" if one reason is in Remberence of Him and the other reason is to proclaim His death. Sincerely, Glenn Brown
2 | Why do we take communion? | 1 Cor 11:26 | Makarios | 93766
Greetings Glenn, There are many things that we can say about the Communion of the Lord's Supper. A "preview" of the Lord's Supper can be seen in Exodus 12:21-28, which involves killing the Passover lamb to celebrate and remember God's deliverance of the Israelites.. On the night He was betrayed, Jesus and His disciples gathered to eat the Passover meal. In the same way, the Lord's Supper was instituted by Christ as a remembrance of His sacrifice on the cross for us (Matt. 26:26), and the deliverance that He has provided for us from our sins. Through Jesus' death and resurrection, God has rescued believers from sin and evil and brought them into a new covenant (Jer. 31:31-34). Thus, we proclaim the Lord's death until He comes (1 Cor. 11:26), since He is the Object of our Communion (Luke 22:19) and we partake of His body and blood (1 Cor. 10:16). Communion is a sign of the unity of believers as one with one another as the church (1 Cor. 10:17). Self-examination is commanded before partaking of Communion (1 Cor. 11:28,31), and newness of heart and life are necessary to the worthy partaking of Communion (1 Cor. 5:7,8). Partakers of Communion are to be wholly separate to God and be in one spirit with the church (1 Cor. 10:21). Unworthy partakers of the Lord's Supper are guilty of profaning the body and blood of Christ (1 Cor. 11:27). If the partaker does not discern or accept that the church is, indeed, the body of Christ, or lacks unity with the body due to sin (1 Cor. 11:29), then they drink judgment upon themselves (1 Cor. 11:30). Communion was practiced continually by the church (Acts 2:42; 20:7), by some even daily (Acts 2:46). There is no explicit biblical instruction as to how often the Lord's Supper should be undertaken, but we should partake of it until He comes again (Matt. 26:29, Rev. 19:9, Isaiah 25:6-8). To answer your question, we can say that the 3 reasons are: 1. Remembrance of Him 2. Proclaim His Death 3. Proclaim His Deliverance Blessings to you, Makarios |

3 | Why do we take communion? | 1 Cor 11:26 | Makarios | 93767
Glenn, Like baptism, the Lord's Supper is a sign, representing both God's action and covenant faithfulness in delivering us from sin and death, and representing the action of those who recommit to faithfulness in covenant with God. Because the church's response to God's salvation through Jesus includes thankfulness, the Lord's Supper has sometimes been called "eucharist," which means "thanksgiving." And because the Lord's Supper represents an event in which Jesus invited the community of his disciples to share the cup and the bread in fellowship with him and with each other around the same table, it is sometimes called "communion." Blessings to you, Makarios |
