Corinthians 11, In our church they teach that the man is the the womans covering. Is anyone familar with this teaching and what exactly does it mean to be the covering? And also what verses are used to show that a man is a covering? Thanks | ||||||

Greetings Terry and Angie! I believe that a husband and wife relationship is best explained in 1 Corinthians 11 in verses 3 and 7-12. I do not believe that a man himself could serve as a woman's 'covering' in the sense spoken of in 1 Corinthians 11, even though I do believe that it is man's obligation to provide for and protect his wife, along with loving her and caring for all of her needs. I believe that the 'covering' spoken of in 1 Cor. 11 in regards to women is that of hair (v. 15), since Paul goes into great detail to contrast women with hair (vv. 10,15) with women without hair (vv. 5-6,13). Now, the Conservative Mennonites and Amish Mennonites would interpret verse 5 to mean "head covering" as in a veil. And this is also acceptable according to the context, since that is what seems appropriate according to their conscience. But I believe that Paul concludes this thought by saying that which is the most appropriate 'covering'- that is, that a woman should wear her hair long. Blessings to you, Makarios |

Makarios: It is also my understanding that a great movement of that time in Corinth, was of women shaving thier heads to make a statement that they were rebelling against the authority of men. This being the case, New Born female believers, that were followers of Jesus Christ, were appearing to be in agreement with the women that were going against the teachings of church of God(1Corinthians 1:2 not a denominational statement). Thus verse 5 in 1Corinthians 11 "But every woman praying or prophesying with her head unveiled dishonoreth her head; for it is one and the same thing as if she were shaven." This along with the fact of verse 7. For a man indeed ought not to have his head veiled, forasmuch as he is the image and glory of God: but the woman is the glory of the man. The woman being the glory of the man, and the women of that day shaving there heads in rebelion against man, was sending a confusing message to the New Believers. God Bless |
