Dear Rochelle, The Bible does not address this question directly. However, if the music -- or anything else in our life -- feeds the flesh more than the spirit, then it is damaging to us, and dishonoring to our Lord. In Him, Doc |

Greetings Doc, Is there any evidence in the New Testament that would suggest the dedicating of so much time to singing; I sure can’t find it? It seems “to me” if music were such an important part of the Christian way of life that it would be found in the following. Ephes. 6:10-17 Finally, my brethren, be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. [11] Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. [12] For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. [13] Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand. [14] Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; [15] And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace; [16] Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. [17] And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Why should our services be so different then those of the first century services? CDBJ |

Dear CDBJ, Technology has made life very different in some respects. In the past how often did people actually hear bands of musicians? Music has become a mass produced consumer item. When you think of it in those terms, it is quite curious, don't you think? When I see someone driving down the street, radio blaring, I often wonder, "Are you not satisfied with your own thoughts?" Of course in a world that seeks amusements (i.e., a-muse, "not think") I guess it shouldn't surprise us. One last random thought: A friend of mine once told me that listening to worldly styles of music before he was saved helped him avoid contemplating his guilt. That's something to think about. Thanks Doc, I see what you are saying. It’s just been a bone of contention with me, since I only spend a given amount of time under the teaching of a man, that is far more educated then I am in matters of the Word of God, that 50 percent of this time is wasted listening to music, which won’t maintain me one bit in a problem situation like Bible doctrine will.
