Mommapbs: You wrote: "1. CAN we know if one is controlled by the Holy Spirit?" Well, if we are to believe Jesus, and the apostles, then YES! "You will know them by their fruits. Grapes are not gathered from thorn bushes nor figs from thistles, are they? So every good tree bears good fruit, but the bad tree bears bad fruit. A good tree cannot produce bad fruit, nor can a bad tree produce good fruit. Every tree that does not bear good fruit is cut down and thrown into the fire. So then, you will know them by their fruits."' --Matthew 7:16-20 "But I say, walk by the Spirit, and you will not carry out the desire of the flesh. For the flesh sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, so that you may not do the things that you please. But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the Law. Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmities, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, disputes, dissensions, factions, envying, drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law." --Galatians 5:16-23 "So then, brethren, we are under obligation, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh--for if you are living according to the flesh, you must die; but if by the Spirit you are putting to death the deeds of the body, you will live." --Romans 8:12-13 You also asked: "2. Does God's Word help mold and shape us into a form that is acceptable to God?" Well, I would not put it in those terms, since only Christ's human existence is one that in itself is acceptable to God. God the Holy Spirit does, however, through the ministry of the word, sanctify us in such a way that slowly but surely He makes us more like Christ. Psalm 19 and Psalm 119 are great places to wonder at how God uses His word to make us more like the Son. --Joe! |

FYI - My response to: "But we have the written word to help mold us an shape us into a form which God will accept us." This post does not reflect the clear teaching of Scripture. Since there are many on this Forum with little or no knowledge of the Bible , I believe it behooves us to use God's Word to support what we post. "Retain the standard of sound words which you have heard from me, in the faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. Guard, through the Holy Spirit who dwells in us, the treasure which has been entrusted to you." 2Tim 1:13-14. God's Word teaches us what is "acceptable to God;" God's Word does not make US acceptable to Him! What you presented indicated that the Bible makes us ACCEPTABLE to God. It does not - only Christ was acceptable to God and only through Him can we be also! "Therefore the Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, so that we may be justified by faith." Gal 3:24 "nevertheless knowing that a man is not justified by the works of the Law but through faith in Christ Jesus, even we have believed in Christ Jesus, so that we may be justified by faith in Christ and not by the works of the Law; since by the works of the Law no flesh will be justified." Gal 2:16 Here, Paul issues a stern wasrning against trying to be justified (acceptable to God) by following the Law (His Word) apart from faith: "You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from grace." Gal 5:4 See also Hebrews 10 We are only acceptable to God through the finished work of Jesus Christ. No amount of Bible study or Christian service will make us more acceptable to God than we were at the moment of conversion because of Christ's righteousness alone. God's Word tells us that it is God's will that we be conformed to the image of His Son - (Romans 8:29) the molding and shaping of our will and character to reflect Christ to others is accomplished through the working of the indwelling Spirit as it stirs the Word of God in our hearts. "But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior," Titus 3:4-6 (See also:1 Peter 2; Eph 1:4-6, Phil 3:8-10) I hope these passages will be of an encouragement to you in your walk with the Lord.
