1 | But how can sin and Holy Spirit coexist? | Rom 7:17 | Bill Mc | 13007
Thanks, Nolan. So, where is the distinction drawn. We know that man is created as a tri-part being, spirit, soul, and body. As I understand it, the spirit is that which can relate to God (for He is Spirit), the soul is the mind, will, and emotions (personality) in which we relate to self, and the body is the physical dwelling for the spirit and soul, through which we relate to others. So, which part of man's being is this 'new redeemed innermost self?' Which part is the unredeemed humanness? Or can't these lines be drawn? And, finally, how can sin dwell in a believer that has the Holy Spirit also dwelling in the same vessel? I, obviously, am still not sure how this can happen? In Christ, Bill Mc |

2 | But how can sin and Holy Spirit coexist? | Rom 7:17 | kalos | 13062
Speaking for myself, I do NOT "know that man is created as a tri-part being, spirit, soul, and body." Can you quote Scripture, chapter and verse, to support your definition of spirit and your definition of soul? How or where does the Bible differentiate or define the difference between the two? Notice, I am well aware of the verses of Scripture that refer to man's spirit, soul and body. That is not my question. My question is what specific scriptures differentiate between and define soul and spirit? I pose these questions in all sincerity, humility and honesty. I have searched for years and I have never found where the Bible defines the soul and the spirit as you define them here. I appreciate you and your interest in the things of God, Bill. Grace to you, --JVH0212 |

3 | Spirit, soul and body? 1 Thess 5:23 | Rom 7:17 | Bill Mc | 13157
Dear JVH0212, 1 Thess 5:23 says, "Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you ENTIRELY; and may your SPIRIT and SOUL and BODY be preserved complete, without blame at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ." Paul here seems to make a distinction, does he not, between spirit, soul, and body? Or Hebrews 4:12 - "For the word of God is...piercing as far as the DIVISION of soul and spirit..." I must admit that I cannot offer scriptures to say, "spirit is...soul is...body is..." As I stated in my question, my definitions are as I understand them, gleaned from my study of scriptures. I may be wrong, that is why I ask questions. But even though I cannot site a specific scripture, the Bible does use these terms and I am seeking to understand what our God is refering to. I'm not sure if I answered your question or not. What do you think of the 2 scriptures I reference to here? In Christ, Bill Mc |

4 | Spirit, soul and body? 1 Thess 5:23 | Rom 7:17 | kalos | 13164
(Bill: Please understand. I am not using an authority to prove you wrong. I'm not necessarily saying you are wrong. What, if any, distinction exists between soul and spirit is something I have wondered about for years. Over the years I have read many different definitions of soul and spirit, but please note: Many different theories (definitions) exist; and I've yet to see one definition (one distinction) based upon a clear passage of Scripture. So, please don't take it that I'm attacking your views. I merely quote the following in hopes of shedding some light on the subject.) MacArthur's note at Heb 4:12. "*division of soul and spirit.* These terms do not describe two separate entities (any more than 'thoughts and intents' do) but are used as one might say 'heart and soul' to express fullness. Elsewhere these two terms are used interchangeably to describe man's immaterial self, his eternal inner person" (p. 1903, MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997). MacArthur's note at 1 Thess 5:23. "*whole spirit, soul, and body.* This comprehensive reference makes the term 'completely' more emphatic. By using spirit and soul, Paul was not indicating that the immaterial part of man could be divided into two substances (compare Heb 4:12). The two words are used interchangeably throughout Scripture. There can be no division of these realities, but rather they are used as other texts use multiple terms for emphasis. Nor was Paul a believer in a 3-part human composition, but rather two parts: material and immaterial" (p. 1850, MacArthur Study Bible, Word Publishing, 1997). (Note: many, many Scriptures were cited by MacArthur in the above note on 1 Thess 5:23 -- too numerous for me to include in this posting. However, one can read and look up for oneself the Scripture references cited in the MacArthur Study Bible.) Grace to you, brother, --JVH0212 |

Mark 12:30 says we are to "love the Lord, your God, with all your heart ... soul ... mind ... strength. Again, it shows completeness.
