1 | w/o the Law would man be concious of sin | Rom 3:20 | Empty_Me | 130204
Romans 3:20 states "no one will be decalared righteous in His (God's) sight by observing the law, rather, through the law we become conscious of sin." Does that mean that without the law (i.e. 10 commandments) all of mankind would be unaware of his sin? beacuse I've noted christains often use the arguement,"how do you know the differnce between right and wrong", alluding to the fact that if we evolved no such thing would exist. i've always kind of understood it to be that the spirit convicts people....but then in romans it says that man wouldn't be aware of his sin if it weren't for the law.

Manchild has a very good explanation. Welcome to the forum, Manchild. Note that the Law is a very good gauge of the human heart. It also shows us our great need. However, it lacks the power to change the heart. It lacks the power to fulfill our need. All these things are accomplished in Christ. Everyone has a conscience, but, for a variety of reasons, it is undependable. (Our pastor says, "You should never do anything contrary to your conscience, but you should never trust your conscience alone.") The Law is an accurate guide, even today, for what is righteousness. The struggle since the time of Adam and Eve, is who will be the law maker? Adam and Eve chose to take into their own hands law making. Today, we have the same problem: Who is the rightful maker of law, God or Man? |
