2 | Bondservant means..... | Rom 1:1 | BradK | 163679 | ||
Hi Seedling, You have the similar usage of "slave", i.e. servant in Rom. 1:1 used by Paul of himself: "Paul, a bond-servant of Christ Jesus, called as an apostle, set apart for the gospel of God," It means: a born bondman or slave. I understand it as someone so identified with Christ, that they'd consider themselves His slave, belonging to Him. Wuest makes this comment on the passage in question: "The name “Epaphras” is the shortened form of Epaphroditus. He was not the man of that same name who was associated with Paul in the Philippian letter. Lightfoot suggests that he was the one who brought the gospel to Colossae. He was a native of that city as is seen by the phrase, “who is of you.” “Servant” is doulos, “a slave.” Lightfoot says: “This title, which the apostle uses several times of himself, is not found elsewhere conferred on any other individual, except once on Timothy (Phil. 1:1), and probably points to exceptional services on the part of Epaphras." Epaphras was most likely "devoting" himself to prayer as in 4:2. His prayers were to God on their behalf. It is prayer with the result that they'd stand spiritually mature in the will of God. "Laboring fervently” is agonizomai, “to contend in the gymnastic games, to contend with adversaries,” figuratively, “to contend, struggle with difficulties and dangers antagonistic to the gospel." I hope this helps, BradK |
