Dear lilman, Could you please be more specific with your question? Do you mean mis-use of marijuana? Though there is no literal mention of marijuana (as per my understanding) in the bible, His Holy Word provides us clear guideline for christians' moral behaviour. Please read 2 Corinthians Ch 6, 1 Peter 1:13-19, 1 Peter 2:11-12. Shalom Azure |

Please search on pharmakeia. "The most common argument within the church against any sort of use of marijuana is the "Pharmakeia argument". Although this argument can be heard in almost any church, it is hard to recognize in a casual Bible reading. In order to come to the conclusion of the Pharmakeia argument one needs to study the original Koinne Greek Bible text. Pharmakeia is a Greek word found in the New Testament that means medication, pharmacy, magic, sorcery and witchcraft. Its root is pharmakon which refers to a druggist, pharmacist, poisoner, magician or sorcerer. God clearly states that Pharmakeia (the use of drugs) is a sin in Galatians 5:19-20a; "The acts of the sinful nature are obvious: sexual immorality, impurity and debauchery; idolatry and witchcraft" (Pharmakeia)." - lionofzion.com The author there said it so eloquently, I felt it was necessary to directly quote the article. According to the stance the Bible takes against using hallucinogenic substances, I would say 'yes'. In Christ, Jay |

Shalom Jay, You stated, "God clearly states that Pharmakeia (the use of drugs) is a sin in Galatians 5:19-20a;" Are you saying that you NEVER use medicinal drugs or are you meaning "street drugs" only? Don't you think it was God who gave man the wisdom and knowledge to find out how to make medicines to make life more comfortable, to even save lives? I do. And I think He gave humans the intelligence to know how to perform surgeries that save lives; and of course, surgeries require the use of drugs. Just wondering...:o) Cheri |

Hi Cheri, You make a good point, but were surgeries actually performed using drugs in the first century of the church? Interesting. Possibly there was anasthetics available by the use of plants, but that is not the point. I agree with the point you made, it was insightful of you to make it. I also agree with Jay, but his choice of words needs to be overlooked. I do not disagree with Jay, so let's not split hairs, we are to be striving for a higher purpose here. Jay stated that 'God clearly calls it sin' when this is a rather muddy issue. ;o) Clear as mud. The Bible calls 'pharmakia' a sin of the flesh. Vine's says under 'witchcraft' , 'see sorcery'. These indeed are works of the flesh. Vine's continues with (my paraphrase) 'primarily signifies the use of medicine, drugs, spells, then poisoning, then sorcery. So the use of medicine is listed above the others. What makes this especially interesting is that it calls upon the proper application of hermeneutics. Shortly explained, hermeneutics is the art and science of interpretation. It involves historical context, as well as cultural, geographical, economic context.... -among others, but the point is made. All of these affect the meaning the original author was attempting to make. We may use the word 'medicine' as a definition of 'pharmakia', but did the original author have that in his mind? Did God inspire that in to his mind? What proper biblical interpretation is, is very hard to place on paper, much less in a volume of books. And a major mistake made by many people is to read the words into our present culture. This amounts to reading what the author is saying to US, and not his original intent. What we end up with, is as many interpretations as there are readers of a passage. But what the original intent of the author's message is not as obvious, and research is involved. This is why we need to pray for understanding whenever we read the Bible. Understanding is what is important and that can only come from above. Eyes that see that we may perceive, Ears that hear that we may understand, That we may be converted, (again my paraphrase) Adam Jr. P.S. It is apparent to me that our little man is a marijuana smoker, looking for biblical support, and we need to understand that he is at least seeking answers, and pray for the Holy Spirit to heal him by giving him answers from God the father and not man. |

Dear Adam, A belated welcome to the forum. Could you please cite scriptures that bear the Greek "pharmakia" in order that we may understand the biblical context when the word is in used? Meanwhile, I am afraid it would not be appropriate to presume the poster a marijuana smoker in search of biblical support just base on the short question which still lacks its clarity for proper answer. Shalom Adam, I'm glad I waited to respond to you, had wanted to pray and consider what you had written. The word was used for things other than medicinal drugs - yea!! Perhaps that is why I have never felt conviction against using medicine, so I guess I'll continue to do so. Thank you for the work and effort you put into your explanation for me. I do appreciate that. Cheri |

Shalom Adam, So you must be a 3rd shifter? I was too on the weekends for years, just have given them up for awhile. Why don't you fill in your user profile so we can all get to know you a bit better? :-) Cheri |

No, actually I work outside, trying to at least from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. -weather permitting. This is getting hard to do for a 52 yr old, but I enjoy it, and it gives me winter months off for much more satisfying pursuits, such as the study of Old Testament Greek. We all need to have something to be thankful for! I live in Wisconsin. I work mostly in an area about 12" below the ground level. -Lots of walking and digging, but the upside is, when I am on my knees, with my hands in the wet, muddy clay, I am furnished with a wonderful opportunity to praise God for not only giving me the capacity and skills to be a servant, but giving me the desire to do so. For what better position could there be for me, a servant to be in, but upon ones knees, with my hands in the soil from which I was made? ! No, I have never been a third shifter, but have worked for years on 24 hour call, in Wyoming and Louisiana, and Missouri. May God bless you, as you diligently seek Him Adam Jr. |

Shalom Adam, Thank you for letting us know a little bit about you, but is there a particular reason why you're using 2 different user-names? That gets very confusing.... It would be best if you choose just one to use. (Also, I think using 2 user names is against Lockman's policies.) :-) Cheri |
