In Romans 11:29, does this also mean that since God gave me a gift(s) and I sin or continue in sin he does not take the gift(s)back?

Dear VDavis, God can and does, by His providence, take gifts away from us that He has given us. Think about the gifts of life, wealth, health, reputation, etc. God can and will remove them when He sees fit. But look at the context of this verse. The gift that God never takes back -- what Paul is speaking about here -- is His gift of grace in salvation! There are other passages that deal with the problem of habitual sin. I'd commend you particularly to the first epistle of John. In Him, Doc |

Okay, why is this scripture used for spiritual gifts? It was told to me, that is why I am searching for an answer, that God gives spiritual gifts and callings and you can walk away from the faith but you still have your spiritual gifts and a calling on your life that you must fulfill. I personally don't get this from this scripture, but I'm not sure what I understand it to say. I've read the entire chapter and will do more research on it. Thank you for your answer, I do understand what you are saying.

Dear VDvais, We can only surmise why people do what they do. We might speculate that the person who told you this simply had not verified that the context supported his assertion. It is a common error that we all have committed one time or another, and are prone to commit again if we do not take precautions. You might want to look at http://www.ccel.org/. You can enter the specific verse and read what various Godly men of the past have written about it. In Him, Doc |
