Hi Steve, I would infer from your answer that you would go with the "Great Power" of the NASB in lieu of for instance the NKJ, "This man is the great power of God." I think that you answer is correct, in that "Simon had taken a designation that was reserved for God". However, I do not see the need for the capitalization of "great power" in regards to Simon. To my mind, if Simon was a Great Power then he would have to be regarded as a "Man" [sic] to agree in upper cases. Of course, the NASB does not make that interpretation. The point that I want to make is that God Himself has great power. We have received from Him a spirit of power and not one of timidity. My question for you now is, "Do you think of the authority or power that Simon was seeking in Acts 8:19 as a Gift or a gift?" A related question would be in relation to Acts 1:4. Are you looking "for the Promise of the Father", NKJ, or would you have us "wait for what the Father had promised", NASB, Acts 1:4? From the heart, Ray |

Hello Ray, I think the capitalization of "Great Power" is in regards to a title given (in this case inappropriately) to a man. Simon was seeking a gift. It is apparent from the text that he really didn't know what Peter had. "Promise of the Father" is probably more accurate. Steve |

Hi Steve, The NASB has a marginal note for Acts 1:4, [Lit. the promise of the Father]. So I would go with the lower case "promise" with the idea of a promised gift. Personally, I interpret Acts 1:4 with four pronouns of Deity. Here is my interpretation/translation for what it is worth: "And as He assembled together with them, He commanded them not to leave Jerusalem, but to wait for the promise of the Father "which you heard from Me"." I compare Acts 1:4, "wait for the promise of the Father" with Acts 8:20, "May your silver perish with you, because you thought you could obtain the gift of God with money!" The promise of the Father is the gift of God, to my mind. But more than that, I see the gift of God as being the baptism with the holy spirit [sic]. I believe that Jesus baptized with the holy spirit. From the heart, Ray |
