Question (long): In Heb.13:17 it says. “Obey your leaders and submit to them.” Who are these leaders, and should we blindly submit to them? The Hebrew passage appears to be talking to the Church and Church leadership. Jesus clearly stated in Matthew 22:21, “Render therefore unto Caesar the things which are Caesar's; and unto God the things that are God's.” In the USA it would include but not be limited to Pastors, Policemen and the President. What is our responsibility in the cases where there are clear abuses of power? The Romans government clearly abused their power in the later part of the Empire, but Christians obeyed to the death as long as it did not contradict Scriptures. When there was a difference between Scripture and Law, Acts 5:29 But Peter and the apostles answered and said, "We must obey God rather than men. Are they the same as found in 1 Pet. 2:13 1PE 2:13 Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake to every human institution, whether to a king as the one in authority, 2:14 or to governors as sent by him for the punishment of evildoers and the praise of those who do right. 2:15 For such is the will of God that by doing right you may silence the ignorance of foolish men. Authority is authority, we should submit to our boss, wives should submit to their husbands, we should submit to our pastor, we should submit to policemen, we should submit to our federal government, except in places it contradicts scripture. 1 Timothy 2:2 for kings and all who are in authority, in order that we may lead a tranquil and quiet life in all godliness and dignity. 2:3 This is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior, |

Greetings Rolff, To a degree you are right. But we must remember that the early christians were kind of stuck with their kings and his appointed entourage. Today, here in America, we are not. We put our people into leadership, we can take them out. And we had better when they turn out to be not what they made us think they were, up to and including the president. Obana's speech to the Egyptiams scared the dickens out of me!! |

Hi grafted in: When you say "But we must remember that the early christians were kind of stuck with their kings and his appointed entourage." Where were these Christians, who were the Kings they were stuck with? Is there scripture? Aren't we stuck with our leaders in the same way? If they had really disagreed with the Kings, couldn't they have rebelled? Set up their own kingdom, or at least gone to some other kingdom? Vintage68 |

Hi GI: Yeah I guess your right I did think, your note was self-explanatory, but I wasn't asking for people, to give their personal views on the political scene we have today. That goes against the terms of use, that we all agreed to when we joined the forum. You raised the point of the Christians having kings and their appointed entourage. I was just asking you for the bible references. But you can forgo answering, I see that it bothers you. By the way did you read the original question at all? If so did I word it in such a way, that it was hard for you to understand, seems I have a way of doing that sorry, please forgive me:-( Vintage68 |
