TELSON, The Greek in Acts 2:38 shows that baptism is after salvation. Did the first belivers understand it? I think they knew about John's baptism of repentance (Mat 3:11, Mar 1:4, Luk 3:3) Act 13:24) ... but this baptism was different one more ways than one (Mat 3:11, Act 19:4). There was usually very little delay in the NT after salvation when one was baptized. Today, we usually delay, so we can explain what it means. We say baptism is to show we are a follower of Him. But, where does the Bible say so? S |

2 | what i personally think | Acts 2:38 | Val | 193792
Matt 3:13 Then Jesus *arrived from Galilee at the Jordan coming to John, to be baptized by him. Matt 3:14 But John tried to prevent Him, saying, "I have need to be baptized by You, and do You come to me?" Matt 3:15 But Jesus answering said to him, "Permit it at this time; for in this way it is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness." Then he *permitted Him. Matt 3:16 After being baptized, Jesus came up immediately from the water; and behold, the heavens were opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending as a dove and lighting on Him, Matt 3:17 and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, "This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased." As our Lord was baptized publicly we are baptized publicly. Since He was baptized, we follow Him by being baptized also like He was - publicly and as an act of obedience. Baptism also shows others that we are in the family of God. It also reminds them of our Lord and His life. We hope that others too will come to Him. It is a powerful witness for Him. |

Val, The passage cited (Matt 3:13-17) does not show we are a follower of Him ... it just shows "is fitting for us to fulfill all righteousness" ... do we add to Scripture? S

Dear Searcher, Good argument! The end do not usually reveal the cause. Just quote an old post of mine (183359) in support. "There are in fact cases of people receiving baptism for certain motives. To quote a real case I experienced, many years ago, a good friend of mine had herself and her daughter baptized into Catholic. She admitted that her purpose was to get a better chance (or an advantage) for her daughter to enter into a famous Catholic school. She went to church purposely with her daughter during the period of such arrangement, but never before or after the baptism was done. I felt so sad and worried about her for such cheating. I also know that it is only a corner of the iceberg in our society." Shalom Azure |
