1 | Possible that the all scholars wrong? | Acts 2:38 | Ray | 79274 | ||
Hi sniper, The translation of those words is not the focus of your discussion. No one has doubted that these words are translated correctly. What your discussion revolves around is whether or not we are to "repent for the forgiveness of sins" or whether we are to "repent and be baptized for the forgiveness of sins". Why are you trying to say that these words "for the forgiveness of sins" are being disputed? Let me offer one thing to consider: 1) The manuscripts do not differ on these words translated "for the forgiveness of sins". 2) The manuscripts do differ in that there is one insertion after the word "Repent". That insertion is translated "he says". a) That shows to my mind that this has been discussed before and that someone had made this insertion to show the importance of this subject of repentance. b) An insertion or difference in manuscripts also alerts me to look at the number of pronouns of Deity. 2) Another difference in manuscripts is the inclusion of the possessive sins. "For the forgiveness of [your] sins". a) This shows to my mind that we each have to repent (change your mind) about our sin(s). b) What is the sin that pierced them to the heart? What is the sin that bothered their consciences? It was the sin of crucifying this Jesus. c) When we have the gift of the word of truth, having this knowledge that this One was both Lord and Christ, then we have received the *holy *spirit. It is only then that we desire water baptism as a believer. 3) When we have differing manuscripts I look to the number of pronouns concerning Deity. Personally, that is why I put holy spirit in lower case and why I go with the NASB in their rendering "as many as the Lord our *God shall call to *Himself". This Jesus is both Lord and Christ. This Jesus is the Lord our God. John 10:30, "*I and the *Father are one." Ephesians 1:15, "by abolishing in His flesh the enmity, which is the Law of commandments, contained in ordinances, that in *Himself *He might make the two into one man, thus establishing peace,..." Ephesians goes on and says that we have our access in one Spirit to the Father. Why if we have begun in the Spirit do you stress the need for water for the forgiveness of your sin?
