Gamaliel is mentioned only twice in scripture: Acts 5:34, Acts 22:3. In Acts 5:34-41, the story of how Gamaliel a Doctor of the Law and a respected member of the Sanhedrin, speaks up and addresses the high court on behalf of the Disciples, being of God or not. And then in Acts 22:3, we see Paul stating that he was taught by Gamaliel. Jewish tradition states that Gamaliel's grandfather was Hillel, the prominent rabbi who represented the liberal wing of the Pharisees in opposition to the more rigid, and conservative wing led by Shammai. |
