Elders to gather together in the Bible ... in this case with Paul. It implies it was just them. I believe that there are some sensitive issues that they need to discuss, and others should not attend. Other than that, it is up to the church to dicate the results of the meeting. |

I don't think there is any specific guidance as to how the elders should conduct their meetings so their style of meetings apparently has been established over the centuries. The only scripture I can possibly think might apply would be the one about the golden rule. So, the elders would wisely choose to have an open meeting with the whole congregation to discuss those topics that apply to the whole and those private matters need to be discussed in private with only the parties actually involved. At least, that's the way it's done where we're members. What do you think? God bless. |

I was somewhat vague in my opening question. Let me clarify. I understand that the elders sometimes have "congregational meetings" where they specifically invite the congregation in order to present an issue and discuss it, e.g. hiring new pastor or purchasing new building. I also understand that elders regularly must address sensitive, private problems, e.g. marriage problems of a member, or staff salaries. My concern is that my elder board has regular monthly meetings in which no part of the meeting is open for church members to observe. I asked if they would open a portion of the regular elder meetings, and the answer they gave was, "No." This policy seems unwise to me. It gives the impression of "secretiveness". I am asking, "Should I challenge them on this issue and how from a Biblical perspective?" |

I think the consitution, by-laws or something in writing dicates the process of the elder meetings. Also, the selection of the elders and the rules they must follow. They should cite Scripture for this. If you ask why you cannot attend - I think the answer would be part of the meeting is senistive and if they need to go back to that matter, while the public is there ... there could be problems. I doubt you can find Scripture to challege them. I attend an elder rule church. While I could have more input at the time they make a decision, I am satisfied that I can challenge a decision they made. |
