1 | Is this the same Sosthenes? | Acts 18:17 | retxar | 23801
Sosthenes became the ruler of the synagogue in Corinth after the former leader, Crispus, believed upon the Lord (Acts 18:8). Sosthenes seemed to be the leader of the Jews who rose up against Paul. Gallio refused to listen to the Jewish charges against Paul because God had promised Paul protection (Acts 18:9-10). The angry Gentiles believers gave Sosthenes a beating as Gallio looked the other way. Is this the same Sosthenes that Paul later calls "his brother" in 1Cor 1:1?. thanks, retxar |

2 | Is this the same Sosthenes? | Acts 18:17 | Makarios | 23812
Greetings retxar! The Ryrie NASB Expanded Edition Study Bible states, "18:17 Sosthenes became the victim of the Greeks' anti-Jewish feelings. Obviously he was the head of the anti-Pauline faction in the synagogue and a Jew. If this is the same Sosthenes mentioned in 1 Cor. 1:1, perhaps the beating helped him to become a Christian!" "18:17 they all took hold of Sosthenes. It is not clear whether the Greeks beat Sosthenes, seeing the occasion as an opportunity to vent their feelings against the Jews, or the Jews beat their own synagogue ruler because he was unsuccessful in presenting their case- probably the former. A Sosthenes is included with Paul in the writing of 1 Corinthians (1:1). Perhaps he was the second ruler of the synagogue at Corinth to become a Christian in response to Paul's preaching (Acts 18:8)." [The Zondervan NASB Study Bible] The MacArthur NKJV Study Bible states, "..Since he was the ruler of the synagogue, he would have presented the case to Gallio. Later, he converted to Christ (1 Cor. 1:1)." So a consensus amongst my sources believes that the Sosthenes mentioned in Acts 18:17 and 1 Cor. 1:1 are speaking of the same person who later converted to Christianity. Blessings to you, Nolan |
