As I see it, all that must be known about God, can be known. All men will stand before God without excuse. God has or will reveal Himself to "all men" either by way of internal special revelation, or external natural revelation. Rom 1:20 NLT From the time the world was created, people have seen the earth and sky and all that God made. They can clearly see his invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature. So they have no excuse whatsoever for not knowing God. Rom. 1:19-20 "makes it clear, that there is a revelation of God in nature that every man sees and knows. It is clear enough so that no one can miss it and universal enough so that no one can claim to be ignorant of it." Verse 19 says it two different times: "Since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them." Then verse 20 says it again: "For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities—his eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen." "The truth about God is clearly seen in creation. That truth is available to every person. That truth "gets through" to every person. That explains why every culture on earth has some conception of a Supreme Being" Robert Mounce offers this helpful summary of the biblical teaching (Themes From Romans, p.12): No one is excluded. No one can get away with saying, "I don't believe in God." As someone has said, "You can't turn out the light by closing your eyes." The heathen who has never heard the gospel or the name of Jesus is as responsible as anyone else. Not for failing to accept a message he has never heard, but for rejecting the knowledge of God revealed in creation. People do not suffer eternal exclusion from God for not having been born to the right parents in the right part of the world, but for rejecting that knowledge of God which is readily available for all. Adrian Rogers tells of a man who owns a trucking company in the south where part of the hiring process is a lie detector test on which one of the questions is “Do you believe in God?". They have observed that even avowed atheists who answer this question "no" are shown to be liars by the lie detector! AO, The problem would be for those who are faithfull to all these evidences about God, to find Him in Christ if they are immersed in cultures that are deeply religious in ways that contradict the Gospel. Like some Muslim teenagers that are conditioned to be bombers and think that Allah is God and die as suicide bombers. For me, no matter how much these fanatics would try to conceive God in their minds, they would have this strong cultural element to force them to see reality and God from a very narrow point of view. And emotional conditioning is a strong element in forming consciousness. I wonder if these suicide bombers, dying as young people, could ever get to know God. And there are inummerable Muslims in the world. Just to give one illustration. How deep can the Gospel go if it is the only means of salvation? Thank you, Finder |

I recently heard a testimony from a Muslim, who was raised and conditioned with a herat filled with hatred, and his journey out of that, into faith in Christ. Never say never. Thats why Romans 1:20 says they are without excuse |

Doc Compare the Edwards commentary you posted in a reply to me, in contrast with the following commentary. John 5:40 And you are not willing to come to Me that you may have life. And ye will not come ... - Though the Old Testament bears evidence that I am the Messiah; though you professedly search it to learn the way to life, and though my works prove it, yet you will not come to me to obtain life. From this we may learn: 1. that life is to be obtained in Christ. He is the way, the truth, and the life, and he only can save us. 2. that, in order to do that, we must “come to him” - that is, must come in the way appointed, as lost sinners, and be willing to be saved by him alone. 3. that the reason why sinners are not saved lies in the will. “The only reason why sinners die is because ‘they will not come’ to Christ for life and happiness: it is not because they ‘cannot,’ but because they ‘will not’” (Henry). 4. Sinners have a particular opposition to going to “Jesus Christ” for eternal life. They would prefer any other way, and it is commonly not until all other means are tried that they are willing to submit to him. (Barnes Notes) "Jesus, who told some Jews in John 5:34: "I say these things that you may be saved." But "saved" they were not. Why? Hi, NC... Yes, one of the benefits of regeneration is that the will of man is freed from its slavery to sin. Thus, through grace, God divinely restores what the Fall destroyed. Albert Barnes departs from orthodoxy in his stance on the operation of the will. A thing that brought censure to him from his own denomination. Keeping that single weakness in mind, I still use his commentary from time to time. "Whilst a man is persuaded that he has it in his power to contribute anything, be it ever so little, to his salvation, he remains in carnal self-confidence; he is not a self-despairer, and therefore is not duly humbled before God, he believes he may lend a helping hand in his salvation, but on the contrary, whoever is truly convinced that the whole work depends singly on the will of God, such a person renounces his own will and strength; he waits and prays for the operation of God, nor waits and prays in vain." --Martin Luther In Him, Doc |
