1 | why "WE' in lieu of "I" Jn 9:4 | John 9:4 | jerrynmyrt | 73652
Why use the word "We must work--when KJ/NKJ reads, "I must work--? I use NASB while teaching two adult clases and when asked why "We-" vs "I" is used in NASB I said 'His remark was directed to disciples and thus to all of His own'. 0n reflection I will add at this weeks classes.."He is referring to Triune God". Help! RSVP Thanks Jerry
2 | why "WE' in lieu of "I" Jn 9:4 | John 9:4 | Morant61 | 73662
Greetings Jerry! This is one of those relatively rare examples of when no one is sure what the original text said. There is strong textual support among the Greek manuscripts for the reading "I", and there is strong textual support for "we". Further, there really isn't any reason to prefer one reading over the other. The only slight point which lends some support to "we" is that it is the harder reason. I.E. - There doesn't seem to be any reason for scripes to change the reading (either accidently or intentionally) to 'we' if it originally said 'I'. But, the textual support is so strong for both readings, that this point is not decisive. I hope this helps! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
