1 | The truth shall set you free? | John 8:35 | Ray | 71733
King James Version: John 8:35, "And the servant abideth not in the house forever; but the Son [sic] abides forever." In the past I have gone with this version, but am now reconsidering the passage and going with lower case "son". The NASB has "the son" and the NKJ has "a son". What is the difference between a "son" and the "Son"? From the heart, Ray |

2 | The truth shall set you free? | John 8:35 | Emmaus | 71739
Ray, In John 8:31-47, Jesus is speaking about the difference between free men and slaves. It is like the difference between those who are under the Law and those that are in the family by grace and sons by adoptions. See v 34 "slaves to sin" and then see where the "Sone" (Jesus) sets you free and you too are free like the true "Son" of God as opposed to a son of Satan (v.38-41,41) See Paul in Romans about our adoption whereby we becomes sons rather than slaves to sin and Satan. 3 | The truth shall set you free? | John 8:35 | Ray | 71749
Hi Emmaus, You have written well of some great differences: free and slave, Law and grace, unique Son and sons by adoption. The differences you point out in verse 34 are the contrast between the slave and the Giver of freedom. Yes, these are great differences. The difference between a son of Satan and the Son of God is great. That is why I think it important to decide whether John 8:35 is speaking of the eternal Son who remains forever or simply an adopted (born again) son who has the hope of eternal life, freed by the Son. But I would like to consider with you verse 32 also. It is the Son who will set you free. Would you agree with me that it is the Truth that will set us free? There is a difference between the word of truth and the Truth, also. Romans with its introduction of "spirit" or Spirit of adoption as sons for Romans 8:15 would be a good discussion also, I believe. From the heart, Ray |
