1 | No man ever spoke like this Man, NKJ | John 7:51 | Ray | 110343 | ||
I was meditating on John 7:51 this morning and comparing it with John 14:22. Would you care to offer your thoughts on these passages? From the heart, Ray |

Of course, we are contrasting two different passages with a different audience in each one. The first one Jn 7:51, it is Nicodemus asking the Lord the question whereas with the following, Judas is asking. 15"If you love me, you will obey what I command. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever-- 17the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[3] in you. 18I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you. 19Before long, the world will not see me anymore, but you will see me. Because I live, you also will live. 20On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you. 21Whoever has my commands and obeys them, he is the one who loves me. He who loves me will be loved by my Father, and I too will love him and show myself to him." 22Then Judas (not Judas Iscariot) said, "But, Lord, why do you intend to show yourself to us and not to the world?" 23Jesus replied, "If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. 24He who does not love me will not obey my teaching. These words you hear are not my own; they belong to the Father who sent me. 25"All this I have spoken while still with you. 26But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid. From the context, I like the comforting words from our Lord about His sending the Comforter and of course He is represented as being in God's Word, the Bible. He is the one who empowered the Apostles through their ministry and He gives us strength and assistance when we pray for it. Now that we have the historical records of those events, including the miracles and the many other activities of the early christians in the first century, we no longer need a miraculous measure of that Holy Spirit. God wants us to reach the highest level of faith and accept His existance and His Words in complete faith and trust. This of course shouldn't be a blind faith but one that is built on a solid set of circumstantial evidence and personal testimonies from our christian predecessors. However, I'd be the last person in the world to put any restrictions on our Lord or God, the Father. All 3 of the Godhead are certainly able to do anything they wish, thus we know or experience someone who enjoys remission of cancer after the doctors have completely given up all hope of this person living after a few months. All I'm asking is that we test the spirits of this modern age as we're directed in 1 John: 1 John 4:1 Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to see whether they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. If people claim to have miraculous powers as we see in the Bible, let us look for miracles of the same kind we see in our Bibles. I would urge caution about believing that God acts through people in this day and age. ALL Bible examples of this kind of miraculous power involve Apostles or someone who received that power by the laying on of Apostles hands. All except for Corneilius. He received the same dose of power from God as did the Apostles. So unless there are some 2,000 year old Apostles walking around, God doesn't work miracles through people any longer. He imparts those wonderful feats of healing directly. What is your conclusion about the matter, this contrast? God bless. |
