Thanks, My daughter requested a good study bible because she is in a bible study group which is dominated by a couple of people with head knowledge not heart knowledge. She wants an accurate translation so that when she makes a point they will not be too quick to dismiss it. We have a NLB which is much better than the original Living Bible but not really suitable as a study bible. Besides the NLB only cost about eight dollars and she could pick up one for herself if she wanted to. I could have bought her a bookman (after all it is a 21st present) but I agree with you that a bible is to be read not used for proof texts at 20 paces. My hope is that I have taught her well and that she will use the bible as an aid to support the less confident when they are right and provide another voice of reason within her study group. Regards, Mark. |

Greetings Mark! I know what you mean! A few months ago, when I was taking a long vacation from this Forum, I walked into a United Methodist church that I had never, ever visited before on a Wednesday night, and immediately engaged in an adult Bible study class with about 20 people. However, there was a guy in that class that seemed to have an opinion on just about everything... But he met his match that night. I was able to refute all his arguments and flawed reasoning, and then some! :-) I didn't want to embarrass the poor fellow in front of the entire class, but it was clear that I gave him some "opposition" in that class on that day, and the whole class knew it. Beware of those who like to "rule" a Bible class! They gave no 'edge' room for others to make an observation. And when they are dead wrong about something, they never admit it! The best anecdote to those who are filled with head knowledge as opposed to having it in their heart is to "KNOW" the Bible inside and out! If you truly read, study and apply the Bible on a DAILY basis, then it will not be long when you will become a strong fortress for protecting, defending and preaching the Word. Blessings to you, Makarios |
