Subject: Doctrine of the Necessity of Scripture |
Bible Note: The necessity of Scripture means that the Bible is necessary for knowing the Gospel, for maintaining spiritual life, and for knowing God's will, but is not necessary for knowing that God exists or for knowing something about God's character and moral laws. The Bible is necessary (1) to know the Gospel; (2) maintaining a spiritual life; and (3) for knowing God's will. However, the Bible is not necessary for (4) knowing that God exists and (5) knowing something about God's character and moral laws. "But He answered, 'It is written, "Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that comes from the mouth of God."'" (Matthew 4:4 ESV) Nothing substitutes for the truth of the Word of God: "And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for your sake, who through Him are believers in God, who raised Him from the dead and gave Him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God. Having purified your souls by your obedience to the truth for a sincere brotherly love, love one another earnestly from a pure heart, since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God; for 'All flesh is like grass and all its glory like the flower of grass. The grass withers, and the flower falls, but the word of the Lord remains forever.' And this word is the good news that was preached to you." (1 Peter 1:17-25 ESV) Modern society tries to replace the power of the purity with public opinion. Modern society tries to replace submissive obedience with rugged individualism. Modern Society tries to replace sincere, deep love with shallow human affection. Modern Society tries to replace divine regeneration with human decision making. Modern Society tries to replace the eternal Word of God with human philosophy. (These notes culled from Dr. Wayne Grudem's Systematic Theology, Zondervan Press) |
