Hi, LJ... I'm not certain why you'd need to hear "the Word from a true Christian." You have the Scriptures yourself. Read them! Your obedience begins in being saved. As you look more like Christ and love Him more dearly, you show yourself to be His disciple. Having John 14 and 15 as a plumb line is a good thing! Take it all within the right context of the entire message of John's Gospel. In Him, Doc |

3 | John 14 obedience to God. | John 5:39 | LJ777 | 191691
The reason that I say that we all need to HEAR the Word is because in Romans 10: 13 - 17 it says we need to hear the Word in order to have faith, and in order to call upon The Lord we must have faith.
4 | John 14 obedience to God. | John 5:39 | DocTrinsograce | 191697
Hi, LJ... Listen: the word "hear" doesn't strictly mean that the message must be conveyed in an auditory (spoken) fashion. It involves rightly understanding a message. Do you hear what I am saying? Note how in the above paragraph I used the words listen, hear, and saying. In reality, you can't literally listen to my post, you can't hear the words of my text, and I'm not speaking. :-) However, we still use that kind of language, without fear of being misunderstood! In that passage you cited, you have the Word itself, provided explicitly by the Holy Spirit, as penned by the apostle Paul. You can think of Paul -- certainly a true Christian -- preaching these very words. You can think of yourself as being a hearer of the message, attentively listening, making the effort to draw the full meaning of the preachers words. Paul penned that message a long time ago, and you are reading it today. Do you see? Although he died a long time ago, still his sermon is preached. You see, LJ, God has already granted you a measure of faith. First, you have a desire to please the Lord. Second, you recognize that He must be approached on His terms, not your own. Third, you know to seek out the truth in the Bible. Finally, you are making every effort to walk out what you are learning. Those kinds of things do not originate in the heart of fallen men. These are evidences that God is actively at work in your life. In Him, Doc |
