1 | what if we don't do the if | John 5:24 | Robert Nicholson | 69530 | ||
Christian 7 I would like to look at Romans 13. I believe that some of our problems with interpretation of scripture is that at times we attempt to make meaning of verses in isolation. It is only within context, moving from the narrow to the wide do we see how these verse fit into God's word. In Romans 13:1 Paul asks "Hath God cast away his people? He is looking at his people nationally not as individuals. In v. 2 he reminds them "God has not cast away his people..." However, from v. 3 until v. 11 he explains that as a nation they have been set aside or broken off because of unbelief v. 20 In v.12 we find that by the fall of Israel "that salvation is come to the Gentiles"v.12 The warnings from v 12 to 24 are aimed at the Gentile nations. They are warned not to be proud v. 18 and if as a nation they fall into unbelief v. 20 they too will be broken off. V.22 "Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God:" It is God's perogative to show mercy to whom he will show mercy. This chapter is dealing with God's dealings nationally with Israel and the Gentiles rather than with individual testimony. I believe that we can rest on the promises of God and the Words of our Lord Jesus Christ that he gives unto us eternal life and they will never perish. We must remember that the gift of eternal life which we receive is ours with no strings attached. The idea that a person who belongs to Christ would wish to give back this free gift is ludicrous beyond comprehension. I will look at your (ifs) sometimes we are dealing with the if of argument which means "since" although not in all places. Peace in his Name Robert |

KJV Romans 9:15 15. For he saith to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion. KJV Romans 11:22 22. Behold therefore the goodness and severity of God: on them which fell, severity; but toward thee, goodness, if thou continue in his goodness: otherwise thou also shalt be cut off. I do rest on the promises of God Robert and I appreciate your response. I usally take the Word personaly as God is speaking to me not to a nation such as a Gentile nation,but as me being the Gentile He is speaking to...I do notice what you said tho that Paul is speaking to them as a nation. KJV Romans 11:21 21. For if God spared not the natural branches, take heed lest he also spare not thee cut off from what? God Bless |

Dear brother: "cut off what" ? V.21 I believe that Paul is teaching that Israel nationally has been cut off, "their eyes have been dimmed" and at that time God was bringing the gospel to the Gentile nations. However, Paul is warning the Gentiles that they cannot take for granted the blessing which is theirs and if they take a position of pride and unbelief that they too will be cut off. Do we not see this today in nations that forget or turn against God? In Romans 3 we see that as individual whether Jew or Gentile we are all under sin. We know that Christ died for the ungodly Romans 5 which takes in all individuals. The gospel message is to the whosoever will (John 3;14 to 16) and lost guilty sinners can be born again by resting in the work that Christ has accomplished on the cross. It is the work and worth of Christ which secures our eternal redemption. In James we look at the principle of works being the fruit which should come from a Christian if they have been changed from within by the Spirit of God. If we profess to be saved and show no fruit of the Spirit in our lives, we can not justify our claim outwardly to others. Nevertheless, it is not our works which accompany salvation that secures our standing before God, that is only accomplished by Christ who paid the debt in full. When we trust Christ it is God who does the work within our hearts, it is not a self-improvement thing, but rather a complete new creature in Christ which brings us into a relationship with God as sons or children. We were born by the Spirit of God into this family. God Bless Robert |

understood about the nation thing Robert...thank you for your response...as we do see that to be true in many countries today. good works are a cause- effect ....when Christ saved me from who I was the cause of His salvation effected the way I am...not because the works will get me to heaven but because of what He has done for me I have a desire to do a good work for Him....I beleive that is the works James was speaking of....thanks again but there are still some if's that I am looking at besides just the one in Roman's...thanks again Robert God Bless |
