This is what my NIV Bible life application notes say: 3:8 Jesus explained that we cannot control the work of the Holy Spirit. He works in ways we cannot predict or understand. Just as you did not control your physical birth, so you cannot control your spiritual birth. It is a gift from God through the Holy Spirit (Romans 8:16; 1 Cor. 2:10-12; 1 Thes. 1:5, 6). |

John 3:8.. "The Holy Spirit is sovereign. He works as He pleases in His renewal of the human heart." (Zondervan NASB Study Bible) "The same Greek word means both 'wind' and 'spirit', see Ezekiel 37:5-10" (Oxford Annotated RSV) "'The wind blows where it wishes.' Jesus' point was that just as the wind cannot be controlled or understood by human beings but its effects can be witnessed, so also it is with the Holy Spirit. He cannot be controlled or understood, but the proof of His work is apparent. Where the Spirit works, there is undeniable and unmistakable evidence." (MacArthur NKJV Study Bible) "JOHN 3:8: Holy Spirit, Freedom—Jesus affirmed two things about the Spirit here: freedom and mystery. The Spirit (Greek 'pneuma') moves about just as freely as the wind (Greek 'pneuma'). No religious group controls Him. No religious doctrine fully defines or confines Him. He is at liberty to move about exactly as He pleases. The Spirit works to regenerate all ungodly people, even pious Pharisees. The reminder is still needed today in the church. The movement of the Spirit is mysterious, like the wind. You cannot see the wind; you can only see the results of its moving, such as the movement of tree branches. You cannot see the Spirit; you can only see the results of His works, such as the changed lives of those who have been born again. Both the freedom and the mystery of the Spirit suggest that He is divine, for only God is utterly free and utterly mysterious." (Disciple's Study Bible) |

We must not forget the true message of this passage. It is speaking of the Holy Spirit having freedom to move, and you must understand the operations of the Holy Spirit can be compared to the wind. You don't know where the wind has come from or where it is going, yet you can hear the wind. But the scripture didn't end at the Spirit of God, it goes on to say "So is everyone that is born of the Spirit". This scripture is not just to give us a deep revelation on what the Spirit of God is doing but to give mature christians revelation of what their lives are to be like. It is strong spiritual meat for the mature christian that is born of the Spirit and walking after the Spirit and not after the flesh. When you are born of the Spirit you move in the flow of the Spirit of God, allowing your life to be governed by God.(James 4:13-15) For where the spirit of the Lord is there is Liberty. Is there liberty in your life to allow the Spirit of God to say now lets leave here and go there? If not give God freedom to direct your spirit by His Spirit, because the spirit of a man is the candle of the Lord. It is how He directs. | ||||||
