1 | Does Not Mean Baptism | John 3:5 | 2844
The following verse makes it clear that "born of water" is talking about physical birth and refering to when the water breaks at the time of birth. To take this verse out of context and imply that it means water baptism is a terrible twisting of Scripture.
2 | Does Not Mean Baptism | John 3:5 | Makarios | 7626
Ryrie's Study Bible comments on this verse, "'born of water and the Spirit.' Various interpretations have been suggested for the meaning here of 'water': (1) it refers to baptism as a requirement for salvation. However, this would contradict many other NT passages (Eph. 2:8-9); (2) it stands for the act of repentance that John the Baptizer's baptism signified; (3) it refers to natural birth (specifically, the fluid released when the amniotic sac breaks prior to labor); thus it means "unless one is born the first time by water and the second time by the Spirit"; (4) it means the Word of God, as in John 15:3; (5) it is a synonym for the Holy Spirit and may be translated, "by water, even the Spirit." One truth is clear: the new birth is from God through the Spirit." The MacArthur Study Bible suggests, "Jesus referred not to literal water here but to the need for "cleansing" (e.g., Ezek. 36:24-27). When water is used figuratively in the OT, it habitually refers to renewal or spiritual cleansing, especially when used in conjunction with 'spirit' (Num. 19:17-19; Psalm 51:9,10; Isaiah 32:15, 44:3-5, 55:1-3; Jer. 2:13; Joel 2:28,29). Thus, Jesus made reference to the spiritual washing or purification of the soul, accomplished by the Holy Spirit through the Word of God at the moment of salvation (cf. Eph. 5:26; Titus 3:5), required for belonging to His kingdom." |

3 | Does Not Mean Baptism | John 3:5 | New Creature | 50293
I was going to ask what water referred to here in John 3:5 but I did a search on this verse and found that this question has already been answered in the past. I notice however that there is much disagreement even among noted theologians concerning the meaning of water here. I personally would side with the 3rd defintion taken from the comments of Ryrie's Study Bible which you posted which state. "(3) it (water) refers to natural birth (specifically, the fluid released when the amniotic sac breaks prior to labor); thus it means "unless one is born the first time by water and the second time by the Spirit"; |

New Creature: Surely you would not consider accepting mans idear over Gods Word? I believe Ryrie did not accept the creation account as penned in Genesis, did he? Is it not possible for one scripture to have a meaning for those to whom it wa written and to us now? Perhaps that's how we come to some different ideas? justme |

5 | Does Not Mean Baptism | John 3:5 | New Creature | 50351
I did not say I agree with everything Ryrie ever wrote or said. I only agree with the 3rd option he listed, because I believe that it is in agreement with my understanding of Scripture, as I feel led by what the Holy Spirit of God has been teaching me as I daily spend time alone with God in His word
6 | Does Not Mean Baptism | John 3:5 | justme | 50486
Dear New Creature: I am trying to be kind and loving towards you. For some reason you seem to attack me at every point you can. This is not as it should be. Neither of needs to defend God. You can be kind to us sisters, and brothers, as we too are children of the Living Lord Jesus. Might I suggest you pray before you answer with a note or ask a question, If you feel the message you post will stirr up more ill feelings perhaps it might be better put off until you have total peace about it. As for Ryrie or any scholar I know they are human like us all and are subject to make a mistake. I know as I am maturing some ideas that I believed when I became a christian, have matured by reading more of the Scripture, my spiritual knowledge has widened in th scope of understanding and therefore have had to reconsider my views. I still am growing, and learning to see the body of Christ, or Bride of Christ is much larger than I first thought. I will pray for peace between us, and better understanding. agape, justme |

7 | Does Not Mean Baptism | John 3:5 | New Creature | 50504
Dear justme; I'm sorry you feel as though I attack you. Can you give me an example? If it's merely some thing we disagree on, thats normal. Controversy is not evil; it is the servant of truth. Only prejudice is evil and the enemy of understanding.to disagree with sincere men or women is not to dishonor them. Are you sure your not just over sensitive? That may sound like a rude question, nevertheless, it is one each of us must ask ourselves. Love in Christ |

8 | Does Not Mean Baptism | John 3:5 | justme | 50623
Daer New Creature: We have said a lot sense I wrote this, and I feel you personality is unique. You are very direct. Sometine that directness comes like a atom bomb! When a small hammer would have been kinder. Perhaps, kinder words would give a more recptive message. We all suffer from being hasty with our words. I read this a long time ago, I will pass it on to you. I do not know the author. Lord help my words to be soft and tender; for tommrow I may have to eat them. I have had to eat some mighty tough shoe leather words. It is not easy to swallow, I know, agape, justme |

9 | Does Not Mean Baptism | John 3:5 | New Creature | 50649
Yes it's true of me that I am direct, and I don't pull alot of punches. That is a part of my short-coming which I pray that the Lord will continue to soften me up. I am like a rough cut diamond that has some nasty edges that need to be chipped away, and then when that process is complete, then I need some polishing. Besides that my worst subject in school was English grammar.

oh how I wish they had spell check like my e-mail does. I try so hard to catch my goofs, but I admit i mess up alot. I am glad for people who show kindness and remember that for some of us just getting a computer was earth shaking. And then to have to recall all the way words are spelled. Ug, it is not easy that's for sure! agape, justme |
