1 | disciples only baptized not Jesus | John 3:26 | DocTrinsograce | 193799 | ||
Dear Cheri, (1) A traditional reformed perspective would answer this way: Given that John the Baptist was baptizing in preparation for the coming Kingdom of God (Matthew 3:3-6), and that the Kingdom of God came when Jesus started ministering (Matthew 12:28), and that this was the command He gave his disciples (Matthew 28:19), the answer would be yes. (2) A Baptist would answer this way: All baptism is unto repentance, since "Those who do actually profess repentance towards God, faith in, and obedience to, our Lord Jesus Christ, are the only proper subjects of this ordinance. (Mark 16:16; Acts 8:36, 37; Acts 2:41; 8:12; 18:8)" Therefore the answer would be yes. Although their baptisms were essentially the same, John the Baptist would not have initially sited the name of Jesus since he didn't know the specific details of the Messiah's coming (John 1:32-34). Take your pick. :-) To verify the correctness of my response, I proffered your question, this morning, to a professor of New Testament studies. I think I've correctly rendered his answer, although I provided the Scripture references and the 1689 London Baptist Confession of Faith quotation myself. Anyway, of the two replies you received before mine: I tend to generally agree with the first, though I can't quite ferret out the point of the second. In Him, Doc |

Morning Doc, Once again, I find myself in good company cos I've read and re-read the second, also...:-) Thank you for your input. I have had no problem with the mikvah that Yeshua partook, but when this thread started up it made me wonder about all the other baptisms at that time. I will now thank everyone who responded :-). Your thoughts and your work to answer is always much appreciated. Have a blessed day, everyone Cheri |
