I could be wrong, but I don't think you will find the answer to your question in a book of English grammar or in any standard style guide (such as the one published and used by the New York Times.) As a writer, what I would say is: 1) It is essential that you give scripture references in a style (format) that is easily understood by all. 2) Whatever style you choose, the key thing is to BE CONSISTENT. For example, avoid putting the initials of the translation in parentheses one time and then not putting them in parentheses the next time. Choose one way of doing it and stick with it within the same Question, Note, Answer, etc. For what it's worth, on the copyright page of the NIV, it says: "the initials (NIV) must appear at the end of each quotation." |
