I was ministering to one of my friends and i was telling her that the bible says to be sober at all times. She stated to me that Jesus drank wine and for one of his miracles turned water into wine. What do i tell her about drinking? i know it's not okay to drink, so how do i answer her question and still prove to her that she shouldn't drink?

1. THE SCRIPTURES DO NOT SANCTION THAT WHICH THEY TEACH TO BE AN EVIL. 2. BUT THE SCRIPTURES TEACH THAT STRONG DRINK WHEN USED FOR THE PURPOSE OF INTOXICATION IS AN EVIL. 3. THEREFORE THE SCRIPTURES DO NOT SANCTION THE USE OF STRONG DRINK FOR THE PURPOSE OF INTOXICATION. THERE ARE A LARGE NUMBER OF WORDS IN THE BIBLE TRANSLATED WINE. THE WORD USED WHEN REFERRING TO JESUS TURNING WATER INTO WINE IS THE GREEK WORD "OINOS" WHICH MEANS GRAPE JUICE. FROM THIS WE CAN SURELY SEE THAT ALL WINE IN THE BIBLE WAS NOT INTOXICATING, AND THEREFORE DOES NOT FALL UNDER THE HEADING OF STRONG DRINK. BUT HOW CAN WE TELL WHICH IS MEANT? VERY SIMPLY, WHEN IT IS APPROVED, NOTHING MORE IS MEANT THAN THE FRUIT OF THE VINE; WHEN IT IS CONDEMNED, IT MEANS THAT WHICH INTOXICATES.REMEMBER THEN THE BIBLE CONDEMNS STRONG DRINK. NOTHING CAN EVER CHANGE THAT FACT. AND, FOR THIS REASON, YOU CAN KNOW ASSUREDLY THAT ANY WINE THAT IS OR SEEMS TO BE SANCTIONED BY THE SCRIPTURES IS SOMETHING OTHER THAN STRONG DRINK. |

3 | What do i say to someone about drinking | John 2:6 | The Berean | 43124
That is true about the greek word Oinos...however it doesn't mean grape juice. The Strong Concordance refers it to the hebrew word "yayin" which does mean literally fermented..implying intoxication. Also when the Israelites couldn't take their tithes to the temple they were told to turn it in to money and spend it on whatever they chose...even strong drink (indicating an approval by God). See Deut 14:24-26. The bible states that money is the root of all evil..does that mean we ought to not have? Clearly not..it is about stewardship. Same thing with wine..what is your motive for drinking? Will you control it or will it control you? Take for instance 1st Timothy 3:8 Deacons likewise must be men of dignity, not double-tongued, or ADDICTED to much WINE or fond of sorbid gain. Now notice it did not say don't drink but do not become addicted. Again it is a matter of control and responsibility. We all know the dangers of drinking too much..it leads to drunkeness. We all know the dangers of eating to much (glutony) we gain too much weight and die of heart failure, etc. So do we stop eating? No, we watch what we eat and take care of our selves. Whatever we do, do it with responsibility and be mindful of who is watching.
