2 | There He was? | John 1:9 | Ray | 112027
Hi CDBJ, Thank you for your work in posting these Scripture translations. I would go with the last one you printed. John 1:9, "He was the true Light, which doth enlighten every man, coming to the world." What version is that? It is much like the Literal Translation of Jay P. Green. My understanding of the verses leading up to John l:9 is that John the baptist was spoken of as "This one" in verse seven, and verse 9 would be talking of "That One" and He was the true Light. Question: In that regard, what would be your interpretation of verse seven as far as capitalization of "that all might believe through Him." From the heart, Ray |

3 | There He was? | John 1:9 | CDBJ | 112029
Hello Ray, The translation that you said you liked is the YLT or the Young’s Literal Translation. This is John 1:6-10 in the YLT. John 1:6-10 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. 7The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. 8He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light. 9That was the true Light, which lighteth every man that cometh into the world. 10He was in the world, and the world was made by him, and the world knew him not. My answer to the last part of your question, "that all might believe through Him." is I believe, found in the following. John 6:45 YLT (A) It is written in the prophets, And they shall be all taught of God. Combine that with, John 14:6 Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. That pretty much spells it out, CDBJ |

4 | There He was? | John 1:9 | Ray | 112039
Hi CDBJ, The translation that I liked was the last one you printed in your list. The one you quoted here was the first one on your list. The YLT that you quote here shows the "This one" of verse seven translated as "The same". There it is talking about John the baptist. That one is not the Light. The emphasis of the phrase "that all might believe through Him" is on the "Him". I see no reason for emphasizing John when in the verse "this one" is witnessing about the Light. "That One" was the true Light. In fact, the book of John was written to downplay the importance of John the baptist. John 1:7, "He came for a witness, that he might bear witness of the Light, that all might believe through *Him." John 20:29, "Jesus said to him, "Because you have seen *Me, have you believed? Blessed are they who did not see, and yet believed." 1) John 20:31, "but these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ/, the Son of God; and that believing you may have life in (His) name." Compare/contrast John 1:12, "But as many as received Him/, to them He gave the right to become children of God, even to those who believe on (His) name." John 3:16, "For God so loved the world that He/ gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in (Him) should not perish but have eternal life." 2) John 14:6, "Jesus said to him, "***I am the Way, the Truth, and the Life/, no one comes to the Father, but through Me. 7 If you had known (Me)..." John 1:7, "...that all might believe through ***Him." Oh, to know Him better and better. That pretty much spells it out also, doesn't it? From the heart, Ray |

5 | There He was? | John 1:9 | CDBJ | 112048
Hi Ray, You have the picture right. In the Koine Greek the action of the aorist participle always precedes the action of the main verb. But this is easy to figure out when one is being lead by the Spirit of God during the study of Scripture because Jesus is always the One that will be exalted. John 16:13-14 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. We should always use 1John 1:9 before we study God's Word to make sure that we are in a position to be taught by the Spirit. Have a great day, CDBJ |

6 | There He was? | John 1:9 | Ray | 112088
Hi CDBJ, Thank you for your encouragement and the Scriptures. They gave me a starting place for study today along with John 6:45 earlier. I won't claim to know which Person is teaching us, but I can offer some verses to compare in being taught by God (or the Spirit). And we should keep in mind that we are talking about the true Light. The newest copy of the NASB has made some capitalization changes in the book of 1 John and I will start there. 1) 1 John 1:4, "And these things we write, so that our joy may be made complete. 5 And this is the message we have HEARD FROM *Him and announce to you, that God is (Light), and in Him is no darkness at all." John 6:45, "Everyone who has HEARD FROM the *Father, comes to Me. Not that any man has seen the (Father), except the One who is..." John 16:13, "...*He will guide you into all the truth; for He will not speak on (His) own initiative, but whatever He hears..." 2) I offer these Scriptures that have pronouns that I have penciled in my personal copy to be counted but which are not capitalized by most versions. John 1:4, "In Him was Life, and the (Life) was the light of men. 5 And the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not comprehend it. 5 There came a man sent from God, whose name was John." 1 John 1:1, "What was from the beginning, what we have heard, what we have seen with our eyes, what we beheld and our hands handled, concerning the Word of life--2 and the Life was manifested, and we have seen and bear witness and proclaim to you the eternal (Life), which was with the Father and was manifested to us--3 what we have seen and heard we proclaim to you also, that you also may have fellowship with us;..." 3) John 1:7, "He [John] came for a witness, that he might bear witness of the Light, that all might believe through ***Him." 1 John 2:8, "On the other hand, I am writing a new commandment to you, which is true in Him and in you, because the darkness is passing away, and the true ***Light is already shining." Praise the Lord!!! From the heart, Ray |
