Contextually, in v.46, Nathanael exhibits obvious skepticism to which Philip simply replies, "Come and see". In v.47, Yeshua states THE main distinguishing characteristic of Nathanael, likely a rare characteristic among fellow Jews. Before Yeshua's statement, the two had not met before, so obviously Nathanael wants to know how Yeshua would know this: "Before Philip called you, when you were under the fig tree, I saw you." (John 1:48) What did Yeshua "see" concerning Nathanel under the fig tree (before Philip called him)? |

Hello bigpooch- welcome to the Forum. I believe what Doc was trying to point out to you is that the answer to your question is found in the immediate context of the verse you referenced. The first place to look when you have a question about something in a verse is in those verses before and after (context). Hope this was helpful, Jeff |
